@Kate it is hard! That makes me feel much better thank you :) my boy is 11 days old and he dropped 9% of his birth weight on day 5 so that worried me but he did gain 2 days later so it's on the up now, due another weight check on Wednesday so probably is a growth spurt
Yeah Mine dropped 6% and yeah it’s so worrying with breast feeding but if he has gained again then that’s amazing! Yes I think it’s probably just where he is growing and also sometimes a comfort thing and wants to be close to you! Just know you aren’t alone! I’m only a week or so ahead of you but it’s already getting slightly easier x
If you want to ebf I would suggest pumping every time you give him formula and start dropping the top ups slowly. It's very normal for new borns to feed every hour.
Top ups mean your baby isn’t giving your body the cue to make more milk, so consider pumping each time you give a top up.
Out of curiosity, what makes you offer a top up and not just breast again? Excuse my naivety!! I’m moving from exclusive pumping to BF atm, slowly, and wondered when to stop just offering breast and do a bottle top up etc. got a lot to learn.
@Rebecca I always offer breast over and over until baby boy refuses both or cries like there's not enough and look out for cues such as him having hands in his mouth after being offered it that's when I get the bottle
@Kirsty when this happens you could try burp him for 10mins then offer the breast again. Your breasts will refill withal some milk in this time: the more you offer the breast, the more milk your body will make
Hey lovely- I am basically doing the same. Mine js 3 weeks and previously doing breast every 2.5/3 hours but now it’s every day 1.5 hours or topping up with formula. I think it’s normal when going through growth spurts and what I’ve read is that it has nothing to do with your supply so I’m just going to get persisting. Keep going- it’s so hard isn’t it but I’m sure it will ease up soon!! X
