Mom Guilt - should I have said something?

I took my daughter for her new born shoot today with a female photographer who I’ve used in the past. My girl is 2 weeks old today and was a little fussy and not settling. As the session progressed I could see the photographer getting more and more agitated with my girl, shoving a dummy down her mouth, rocking her a little too aggressively and making comments how “this is the fussiest baby I’ve ever had”. I just wish I had said something to her and told her to stop man handling my kid! I’m abit of a hormonal mess at the moment which doesn’t help… but has anyone else had a “I wish I had said something moment” when it comes to their children? I feel so sad I didn’t trust my parental intuition and say something to her at the time ☹️

I’d of shoved her camera down her throat. what an awful experience sorry u had to go through that! Don’t feel guilty sometimes we are in situations where we don’t process what’s actually happening in the moment until we leave and reflect on it because it’s awkward or uncomfortable. Generally I’d leave a review and warn people of her behaviour.. because why the hell would u go into a career working with young babies and u need patience, when u have no patience Tf 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yes, you should’ve said something but don’t beat yourself over it; she didn’t aggressively shake the baby and cause any damage to her so it’s fine! Just don’t forget this experience and make sure you speak up for your child in the future. The right thing would have been to cancel the shoot, ask for a refund and leave with your baby. Of course, you need to be incredibly confident and in the right state of mind to do this! Overthinking also drives me insane so it’s better to act immediately when something isn’t right rather than thinking about it! etc. Try to get your husband to go with you in the future. Mine always speaks up if there’s anything wrong happening. He doesn’t care about what anyone thinks of him. It’s mainly the photographers fault; she is a professional, so she should have enough experience to manage newborn behaviour - fussy or not. I agree with Shannon - you should leave a negative review to warn others!

100% leave bad reviews and send her email as well after she delivers the pics! This is extremely unprofessional, rude and just unacceptable. I am a starting photographer and how I treat clients is everything. It is so important to have relaxed friendly atmosphere for everyone to enjoy the sesh and obviously also for recommendations and returning clients X

That’s unprofessional. Babies are usually fussy at 2 weeks old because they’re having a growth spurt. As a photographer for babies she should know that. U should’ve curse her ass out

i’m so sorry you had this experience, let’s hope she was just having a bad day. if you have the option to leave a review, i’d do that and like above have said, let her know in an email that you had time to reflect on your experience and this is how you’re feeling. ‘i wish i had said something in the moment’ moments are sooo common, soo real and so frustrating! but it’s okay mama, you’re doing amazing and next time you’ll now be more likely to say something! ❤️

That’s awful, u normally have a bit longer with a newborn shoot so if this happens mum can fuss, feed, change baby whatever needs to be done to calm baby then carry on she should have had a bit more patience. It’s one of those where in the moment you probably think she’s got this she knows what she’s doing then in your head ur questioning it but don’t worry like other said maybe just let her know now you’ve had time to think x

I know that’s easier said than done but try not to be down on yourself. I’ve been there myself where I’ve met replaying a situation and wished I’d channeled my mama bear and called someone out. In your situation it’s the photographer who is in the wrong and has behaved very unprofessionally. When I photograph newborns I don’t schedule other shoots for that day so I’m not required to rush off to do anything else. Newborns sometimes need a lot of extra time for feeding, nappy changes and just being generally unsettled. I do home shoots so it’s probably different to going to a studio, but I actually touch baby as little as possible, leaving the settling and rocking to the family. When somebody hires me to photograph their newborn I know I’m being invited into their little sanctuary to photograph the most precious thing in their lives. Everybody needs to feel comfortable, especially mum!
