I tell my daughter âwatch brothers headâ or âcareful heâs still too small for that.â She has never meant to hit him or bump him. She is absolutely in love with her brother. The only thing I really have to watch for right now is her trying to pick him up or feed him her snacks. I just remind her he is still too little for her food and that mommy needs to help her pick him up. She is 21m and he is 4m. Donât feel bad, she is learning tooâ¤ď¸ just be gentle with her and she will do the same eventually with him. Always talk to her about what youâre doing like âwe have to watch our feet because mommy is laying brother down so I can change himâ. It helped our daughter become more aware of where he is too!
Accidents are accidents because we didnât mean for them to happen. I tell that to my 3 year old constantly. Pound it in to big siblings head that the baby is soooo fragile and truly can break. And then between me and you, remember newborns are super actually super durable. Itâs not your fault!! âGentle careful! The baby can break!â The advice of letting big know what youâre doing with small next helps so they can anticipate. Warning big of where baby is on bed before they climb up. Reminding big that they could fall on baby if they walking on couch toward baby. Try to anticipate everything out loud.

I just kept repeating gentle hands and lifting the toddler off his little sister and showing him how to pat her gently. Heâs still absolutely desperate though cuddle and kiss her lots but now he tries very hard to be gentle, doesnât always manage it but generally he is careful not to lie on her or crush her.
