Exemption Certificate

I got a letter today challenging a prescription I picked up as they cannot confirm that I have a valid maternity exemption certificate I'm a first time mum so I didn't know that I had to actually get one, I assumed my GP or midwife would issue me with one if needed or that it would all be on the system? I did mention getting one to a midwife (not my regular midwife) at my first appointment and she said she'd sort it for me, but since then it hasn't been brought up. Has anyone else had this problem and can I challenge it (if so what did you say) as I didn't claim free prescription fraudulently on purpose and I'm really struggling with money as it is 😖😓

That's so strange! They emailed me mine during one of my maternity appointments. I'd definitely ring the midwife and explain, she should then send it right over and you can send it them for proof x

They don't allow it to be backdated for more than a month prior to applying, so either way I'm going to be fined potentially up to £400 for their failure to send a form off 😖

How do you know the midwife hasn't got it and just hasn't sent it over to you 🤞🏽 .. I didn't pay for mine once and didn't realise my exemption certificate had ran out and they fined me but it was like £100 or less I'm sure! £400 is wild! They offered me a payment plan so maybe ask about that x

I will call and ask tomorrow, fingers crossed that is the case 😩 x

Double check your emails. Mine was emailed to me when I was about 8 weeks pregnant

My midwife sent mine and it ended up going missing in my emails even though I was there when she sent it and I saw my phone receive it! I had to ask for it resending x

I could have wrote this ! I got one too last week I was fuming because I've just had a baby so I'm obviously entitled plus I had gestational diabetes so I had alot of prescriptions and this one was dated in August so I'm dreading more coming through ! The midwife at my booking told me she did it but she must of not sent it off. I rang nhs business authorities and I told them i had a baby less than a month ago so I'm entitled to my free prescriptions the woman was abit arsey and basically said it was my responsibility to have a certificate before picking up the prescription I said I had collected multiple prescriptions and not once was I ever asked for proof of it and there is no way I can fill out the form to get a certificate as it has to be done by a healthcare professional and I was told it was done I just assumed it was. She eventually said they will drop the fine/ fines if I get anymore but I will have to pay the 9.90 prescription charge. She told me that I will need to get a certificate

in order for the fines to be cancelled so I went to my GP and the receptionist give me a form to fill and the Dr will sign it and send it off but they can only backdate it for a month. Just be clear on the phone that you was told it was done and you have no way to send off for it yourself. It's really annoying especially when you have a baby to look after ! X

@Chloe Mine said August too and I've had multiple prescriptions since and nobody said anything either, it's ridiculous isn't it 🤦🏻‍♀️ I'll call them tomorrow, hopefully they will just get me to pay the one prescription charge too 😖 x

I had the exact same thing happen with my firstborn a few years ago. Very frustrating that communication from midwife/dr/pharmacist isn’t clear around these. Knew for this time so was on it straight away. Hope it gets sorted
