Misbehaving in classes

My boy has been going to gymnastics and swimming classes each week for a while now. Last term he started independent lessons and they were going pretty good initially, but I think the novelty has worn off and he's started really playing up for the teachers in both classes the last few weeks.  In gymnastics he screams if he doesn't get to be first. In swimming they have to hold on to the side when the teacher is dealing with another pupil, as the water is quite deep, but he thinks it's hilarious to swim off everytime.  Just wondering if anyone else has experienced similar? Do you intervene or just let the teacher deal with it?  Do we persevere with the lessons, or take it as a sign that he's not really ready for independent classes just yet?

Wow, he's really young to be doing independent lessons without you. Oliver lost interest in swimming and also just wanted to do his own thing. He was going on a Wed but now at nursery on a wed so we've just decided to wait until he's older. His classes were parent and child though, that's all I know around here unless it's 1-1 How many are in your little ones' class (swimming) xx

My little one does swimming (also 3) independently and sometimes he gets told off and has this thing of trying to swim down to the floor in swimming whilst the teacher is with another child. His instructor speaks to the children 1-1 and reminds them of the rules (he does this to nearly all the children at some point in the lesson) and I sit on the side giving my little boy the ‘stop it’ eyes lol! I think they are testing their boundaries at this age and learning/seeing what they can get away with and who with xx

@ruth There were three kids in his swim class before half term but the other two were both a bit older so he got a lot of the teachers attention. One of them has moved up to a different class and two new kids have joined. The two new kids have been very nervous, which I think has stressed him out a bit as he doesn't understand why they're nervous. Plus he's having to wait around a lot while the teacher deals with them and he just can't handle the waiting. He spent most of the lesson sat on the side of the pool today as he just wasn't listening. He loves swimming so much and I'd love for it to stay that way. I really don't want him to start to associate swimming with being told off all the time and to stop enjoying it.

He's the only kid that ever gets told off in both classes and I feel like he's a starting to see himself as "naughty" which breaks my heart. I think we'll continue until Christmas, then if things don't change look at dropping gymnastics for a little while and moving his swimming to a different day, to see if he gets on better with a different teacher. I really like the teacher he's got currently but she's very strict and I just don't think it's the right fit for him.

@Steph aww bless him. Swimming is about having fun and having confidence in the water at his age. Learning new techniques but getting enjoyment out of it too xx

My little boy is exactly the same, he's been like it since he was 2.5! He now doesn't go to any classes as I feel he's just not ready! He was at a swimming class once and the teacher was directing him to go one way and he shouted across the room to her I don't want to go that way I want to go this way! So from then I just took him out 😂 xx
