Acid reflux

My baby boy is showing signs of acid reflux. Ive been pacing his feedings when giving the bottle, burping him after every oz, and gaining him sit up for an hour after eating. He will be fine while sitting up but the second he lays flat in his bassinet he is grunting and squirming then having a lot of spit up sometimes coming out of his nose. His next appointment is dec 3 when he gets his two month shots but I’m not sure if I should call the doc early. They always make me feel silly when I call because I’m a FTM. If anyone has felt with this what did you do? Any recommendations?

Could it be the formula doesn’t agree with him? Lactose intolerance or something like that?

@Briana that was my first thought because I’m lactose intolerant but even with my breast milk he has acid reflux. For a month I exclusively gave him breast milk and I made sure to not have any dairy products including eggs (because who knows) and he still had it. Then I thought it was my breast milk so we put him on exclusively formula for sensitive tummy’s but he still had it. 🤷‍♀️ but mama is tired and I can’t sleep if he is sleeping out of fear.

I'm sorry baby is going through that! There are a few things you can do: 1) check with a lactation consultant to see if babes is latching correctly; 2) check out "Fed the Peds" directory for a feeding therapist near who, who specializes in tongue/lip ties; 3) check out of any chiropractors are near by who work with babies Good luck!

Dang that’s rough! I say trust your gut when it comes to calling, better to call and get an easy solution than not call and wish you had. Don’t let them make you feel silly for calling you are doing your best and that’s what they are there for. 🤞🏼 they have a good solution for you

What formula r u on? I would recommend trying byheart my lo used to spit up a lot but now she doesn’t

@Vanessa we are using similac. We tried regular and sensitive tummy ones. Maybe we need to switch it altogether… I’m trying to bring my milk supply up so I can exclusively pump and feed him breast milk instead of formula but I’m only producing like 9oz a day 😭

I cut out any and all caffeine and my baby's reflux significantly improved. He still has his days but it's a couple of times a week instead of a few times per day. And I'm thinking I may need to cut out chocolate...I think I'm noticing a correlation on the days he does have a lot of spit up.

@Hailey ohh ok ya similac is not the best formula it’s known to give babies problems plus it’s extremely toxic. If u could maybe try something different until your milk comes in more

Hi mom! Currently experiencing this with my (almost) 7 week old as well. I just bought some probiotic drops that help with digestion for babies (gas & reflux). We’re on day 3, and can definitely tell a difference in her mood especially after feedings. I also feed her goat formula because cow milk can worsen the symptoms of reflux due to its high fat concentration, even in adults. When feeding baby, I would advise you to not only sit him upright after feedings but also place him in an upright position while feeding. If all fails, his pediatrician will most likely prescribe him some medicine to decrease the production of his stomach acid.

My baby is like this but exclusively breast fed. I was told it is what it is and that it eventually gets better. That’s if they aren’t showing signs of an allergy. My baby is around the same age but I have been told it eventually goes away at about 2-3 months 🤷🏾‍♀️In the meantime bicycle legs helps my little one and massaging her tummy.

@Vanessa If you’re referring to the lawsuits about Necrotizing Enterocolitis, that’s firstly incredibly rare and secondly more or less only affects premature or medically fragile infants. If your baby is full term and healthy they’ll be fine on any formula. NEC is a (minor) risk to premature babies no matter what formula they are on, and it’s actually even possible for breastfed infants to get it. It’s not about unclean formula or anything, it stems from a problem within the baby’s digestive system itself. You just see the lawsuits against Similac and Enfamil because they’re two of the largest formula makers and thus it’s easy for personal injury lawyers to try to make a quick buck off trying to do a class action suit against them. They’re also used in hospitals, making them the brands most commonly given to medically fragile infants who may then go on to develop NEC. But in reality they’re no better or worse than any other brand as far as the risk of NEC.

@Vanessa I believe the NE risk is 1% for breastmilk-fed preemies, and 3% for formula-fed preemies. It's a very sad thing to happen, but preemies will still need to be introduced to food at some point in their development. 🤷‍♀️ to each their own though.

@Heather I was thinking maybe my caffeine intake might impact it…maybe I’ll try that out as well :)

@Sani what brand of drops did you end up using? I started looking into brands and quality of drops but I haven’t seen a significant difference between them 🤷‍♀️

@Ebonee I 💯 am expecting a response similar from my baby’s doctor. It’s so crazy because I’ll wait a full hour with him sitting up and the second he lays on his back he spits up! I’m sure they will mention his developing digestive system and how the esophagus could still not be strong enough to keep the stomach contents down. 🤷‍♀️ it’s just crazy nerv racking

@Hailey I wonder if it’s the Similac because I use Similac total comfort and I’m going through the same thing but he don’t even have to lay down it just come right back up and every doc o talk to is pissing me off at this point

@Lay 💯 could be the brand. We were thinking about the Costco brand but they never have it in stock. Enfamil would be the next try.

@Hailey It's worth a try. I think it took a few days to see the difference. I don't even drink coffee, just caffeinated sodas. At this point I'm not drinking any sodas at all. It really didn't bother him but he already fell off his weight curve. His ped has refused to give reflux meds. Her go to was to stop breast feeding and give my EB baby formula. I told her no. So then she put in a referral to a gi doctor.... which I still haven't scheduled. I don't do much mind setting the gi doctor as well but I'd have liked to have some reflux meds for him. I'm still considering changing peds because this entire thing just pissed me off so much but that means also switching my other kids. 😒

My LO had acid reflux up until 10 months. I tried everything even goats milk. What worked for my son was probiotic drops and I switched him to hipp acid reflux formula (it is European and a little more pricey but so worth it) I would feed him in an upright position and burp him every 2 oz ( he’s always had a bigger appetite) then once he was done I would keep him upright for 20 mins after he finished his bottle. My BM also gave him reflux because of my diet but it was too hard for me to change up my entire eating habits. So I would give him half BM and half of the reflux formula since it’s a thicker consistency

I ordered from organics best website. They have coupons from time to time and was a little cheaper than other websites

@Hailey they’re called BioGaia probiotic drops and there’s also some ones with vitamin d added for those who breastfeed. As long as the probiotic strain contains Lactobacillus you should be good

@Hailey have you considered doing the allergy test for you son? I’ve heard that the blood test can help you pinpoint exactly what his gut is sensitive to

@Niya considering he is so young I haven’t given it any thought simply because his immune system is still developing and allergies are an immune reaction

@Hailey I was not referring to that. They have heavy metals n other stuff in them I don’t remember exactly but I would not give my baby this. I only use organic non toxic everything

@Vanessa Fully understand your concern with that. Here is an article that I found interesting when I was researching formula vs breast milk and organic formula. https://jpnim.com/index.php/jpnim/article/download/040223/314

@Vanessa however, I also agree it’s important to have many many options and one thing I was looking into is the clean label project: https://cleanlabelproject.org/the-best-worst-baby-food-products/ But I also think it’s important to understand that everyone should do what they feel is best especially in this weird time of misleading information being spread. I like to do my own research and make a sound decision

@Hailey yes exactly! I look into anything I use for my lo that y I put her on byheart it’s a great clean formula

@Jess thank you! I’ll look into that! We also got some anti colic bottles and are testing MAM, Avent, and Dr.browns. Figure it’s better to make sure the bottles arnt causing anything.
