From what I went through Braxton hicks was more like a discomfort not a pain. It would last about a minute but would just feel like I was trending my stomach muscles. My contractions started with period like cramps and the back pain but then it did get worse progressively. It started with twinges then period cramps then pain that you needed to move around with. When it comes to your waters I would check it with a midwife. I had a trickle but was consistent. You should still know/feel when you pee.

@Kirsty the problem is when ive walked around and had some water to drink the pain is still kinda there, its faded off now, but the waters im just gonna put a fresh pair on and use a pad then ill rinf up the midwife, because i cannot tell if i have peed myself

Braxton hicks are usually said to be painless and doesn’t get stronger or more frequent. They are usually felt more in the front of your tummy instead of in your back as well. How far along are you? If you aren’t sure if it’s your waters breaking or not you should get checked as they can test it to see if it’s your waters or just urine. Have the cramps and back ache become more regular as braxton hicks are irregular so there wouldn’t be the same amount of time in between each one if it was braxton hicks, but with real contractions, they would be lasting the same amount of time and also be spaced apart with the same amount of time, for example they could be lasting for 30-60 seconds long with 3 minutes in between each one (just an example). Hope everything goes well for you, good luck!!

@chantelle so ive jusr had a shower and my pains are not there anymore, and they were more or less tbe same each time. I am only 33 weeks, but in regards to the waters i rang the maternity assessment unit and the midwife just told me to place a pad there and ring her back in an hour, as she claims urine doesnt have a smell??

Oh that’s weird, I have been told before that amniotic fluids have no smell when your waters break, and that urine does have a smell. But all you can do now is take their advice and call them back when they said to. Good sign that your pains have gone now, I don’t think labour pains go away so it’s looking more like braxton hicks than early labour, but good luck!! And I hope it all goes well when you call back!! Also, if anything else comes out onto the pad, check the colour of the liquid as if it’s discoloured then you should let them know and they should ask you to go in to be checked over. Good luck!! ☺️

So for me braxton hicks had no pain whereas I’m assuming real ones do

To be honest my braxton hicks were very regular and pretty strong at times. I had them for about 2-3 weeks before my actual labour. I really thought a few times they were the real thing but it didn’t progress and I had 3 sweeps, all of which I was only 1cm dilated following series of strong BH. All I can say is, my real thing started off feeling like I had a dodgy tummy!! In fact I was convinced it was, just felt I had trapped wind and a mild period ache. After a few hours it progressed and there was no question it was the real thing. You will not be sitting comfortably through contractions whereas BH were just uncomfortable but didn’t make me wince in pain. I also didn’t get back pain at all during my whole labour until the very end when it came to pushing xxx

@Ella thank you , they wore off last night and havent had them since. Im Only 33 weeks so not expecting any real signs yet haha
