Start with purées no stress whatsoever and no risk of choking.
I was so nervous and kind of dreading introducing solids too. But seeing how excited and into it my baby is has helped it feel way less overwhelming! We started with avocado because it’s high in iron and fat (I offered it two ways- mashed and in a silicone feeder). I’ve been introducing one or two new foods a week. It doesn’t have to be complicated, just do one food at a time until you’re comfortable. I printed off a list of recommended foods to introduce before the age of 1 and have been marking items off as we go to keep track. Our pediatrician recommended introducing common allergy foods early and often.
@Gracie can you share the list??
I started last week! We are starting slow with aprox 2 foods per week (3 days each). Mostly doing purees, will do some BLW next month probably as I feel more comfortable.
@Gracie thank you! My dr told us to only do fruits, veggies and cereal. And to introduce eggs, legumes, peanut butter when baby is 8 months. However I saw online they can start before that?
Yeah, that’s interesting! Sounds kinda old school. We are skipping cereal (def recommend doing some research on baby cereal, it’s controversial for a reason) our doctor explained introducing allergens early and often helps to prevent the allergy. She did recommend having baby Zyrtec on hand when starting solids but especially when introducing allergens. She also said if you’re nervous with an allergen start with putting some on heir skin and wait 30 minutes. If there’s no reaction (like hives or other irritation) go ahead and put some on their lips.
@Gracie where did you get this? I'd love to be able to print this off.. it looks like it would be very helpful!
I started with purées when my son was 4 months old and now (just turned 6 months) we are starting BLW. I was too anxious about chocking until he got good at swallowing and moving food around in his mouth. Now I trust that he is going to spit up a bite that is too big and he will be able to smoosh it with his gums. Honestly, I have so much fun now seeing him try new things and finding new ways of preparing his food. I also have a baby that LOVES food, so that definitely helps lol Edit to add: we do two meals a day (normally breakfast and dinner) but he is definitely a big eater so I wouldn’t expect lots of 6mo to be eating these much solids. Start with small purées (honestly I used to give him an ice cube size amount) of a single fruit/vegetable. When they are this young it’s more about exposing them to tastes and textures.
Follow Solid Starts on Instagram. Soooo helpful.
It’s always a little nerve wracking. But once you start and get into the flow of it, it becomes easier to trust them learning how to move their mouth and tongue correctly. I thought it’d be easier with my second Little, still got super anxious tho. You got this. Go with their flow of it. 🥰
