Is my baby hungry?

My LB will be 6 months in 2 weeks, I am a 2nd time mum but my first I was advised to wean from 4 months due to ebf and feeding for 50 minutes. I must add I don't and didn't intend to wean 2nd till 6 months. But I'm wondering if these are signs that he's still hungry. My LB sits unassisted and has good neck control so last HV came she did say the readiness is there. He has started waking every hour and a half at night and wanting a feed. It's not the regression we've been through that already. In the day he also feeds every hour and a half. He has started grabbing food out of my hands and trying to put it into his mouth.

Wanting more milk isn’t a sign of being ready to wean. Good head control, being able to sit unassisted and no tongue reflex are signs of weaning, so if he has all of those maybe talk to a doctor to see if you can get the go ahead to start weaning?

Would you say wanting to feed more is due to a growth spurt, cluster feeding etc?

@Fatima I do know they go through a growth spurt between 5-6 months so it could be a growth spurt. If you’re breastfeeding it could also be teething, babies sometimes nurse for comfort because breast milk has a natural pain relief in it.

Are you breastfeeding this time too? The reasons you give for weaning your first early aren't reasons to wean, it seems weird you had that information (I am a breastfeeding counselor) If he's sitting up, taking food himself and chewing it, with good and eye coordination, then he's likely ready. Wanting more milk isn't a sign to wean, but that's not to say he's not now ready. My baby is 6 months on dec 3rd, she's SO keen for food, in starting her slowly with just the odd thing here and there, like she has broccoli last night and today she had some cucumber.

@Charlotte I am bf this time as well. I think COVID might have something to do with the advice tbh my 1st wasn't really seen by the hv it was just phone calls, but he was sitting etc. And thankfully no damage done (yer). Can I ask, the broccoli you gave did you puree or just as finger food?

@Fatima yeah makes sense! It was just steamed broccoli. We had some for tea and I did an extra bit for her. I don't personally believe in purees and me feeding her, I'll let her make the choice by offering her items of food 😊
