I was always a firm no on dummies until my first born got sepsis at 3 weeks and was really poorly in hospital. I couldn't settle him and the nurse suggested a dummy. He needed it. He used it for a week or so once home as he still needed a bit of comfort then never wanted it again so never used it after that. I am now less judgey about dummies! My second baby is 8 months old and he occasionally has it to help him get to sleep during the day as he's a terrible napper and it really does help but doesn't have it any other time. When he does have it we leave it in and he usually spits it out once he's asleep. Negatives are that they can get overly dependent on it, it can be hard to get rid of when you don't want them to have it anymore and it stunts speech development when they still have them when they are learning to speak. Ie 2, 3 and 4 year olds who have them in whilst playing can't talk to their friends/adults or will try to talk with it in.
@Jo Thanks Jo, that's helpful xx
My little boy is super so I’ve never needed one. I can 100% see why some people prefer them but for me it’s just been nothing I’ve wanted to give him x
Pros- easy to settle baby with a dummy Reduces the risk of SIDS Cons- they can become reliant on it for sleep and they spit it out at night time and can wake up because of it. We used a dummy from the day our son was born and took it off him around 9 months. It’s optional when you want to use it and if you want to take it out of their mouth when they’re asleep, I think it all depends on the baby and your own preferences x
