Contraception!

I'm scheduled to get an IUD on Tuesday. Give it to me straight - how was your experience? I hear nothing but terrible things so I am extremely nervous to get it placed. All I hear is horror stories of extreme insertion pain and/or it failing and getting pregnant anyway. It's making me want to reconsider this, and I've already pushed back the appointment once. Please and thanks!! *cross posted*

My first IUD attempt was honestly not a fun time. They say it's a "pinch and a cramp" but for me it was definitely worse. It was honestly worse than my labor and the insertion wasn't even successful. My current provider offers IV sedation for IUD insertions. I got versed and fentanyl. It was a wonderful experience. I laughed with the staff the whole time, I had zero pain and had literally no cramping after at all. I would ask your provider about pain control options because I never would have known it was an option if I didn't ask! The fact that so many places offer zero pain control is baffling to me.

I’ve had it twice and both times have been great. The first time it was more uncomfortable to get it in but that’s because I hadn’t had kids before. The second time it was a breeze

I don’t have personal experience with the insertion or anything, but I believe most pregnancies that happen with IUDs are within like the first week having it. I believe there is a waiting period for it to become fully effective

I think it depends. I wanted to get one after first baby but was told it would be a bit more painful as I had c section and not normal delivery. So the cervix is more closed. My friend who got it said it was definitely painful and was not given or told about pain relief so definitely ask in advance. Plus always wait the waiting period to make sure it is effective

This contraception I had before I got pregnant. It's worked for me as contraception. Not going lie, the inserting of it isn't pleasant. But it depends on you. Hopefully, you'll have a nice doctor.

I had a mirena fitted 7 weeks pp. I found it fine. No pain, no discomfort, had a little cramping after, nothing too unlike period cramps, but, I found they were a lot less painful. Mind you, I have endometriosis. It's been amazing. Just take ibuprofen an hour before you go. Then you can take paracetamol if needed to top up after. Oh & btw, you can ask for gel to numb the area if needed

I will never get a iud I got mine during my c section then it started to move the coils started to cut me on the outside there strings bc they were to long I had the mirena id rather wrap it up then get an iud for sure

First time 2 years after c section was a painful pinch when inserted then period cramps after that died down after a few hours. The second time round was 4 months after c section, feel it really at all - no pain anyway xx

Mine was terribly painful. They ended up puncturing my uterus. Then when they were taking it out, it broke off inside of me and I had to have surgery.

I didn't get one but i know they can come out of place and u can still get pregnant. I was forced to have a tubal ligation(tubes tied) but can still get pregnant
