Birth Control- how is the Mirena?

Hi ladies 👋🏻 I am 6 weeks postpartum. I’m looking into birth control options. The last time I took it was over 10 years ago and it was the pill form. The only thing I didn’t like was that I gained weight and I would sometimes forget to take it. I am thinking about using the Mirena. Would love to hear everyone’s thoughts and if they’ve had a good/bad experience with it.

I used paragard and was very happy with it for years. No hormones was best for me. Only down side to an IUD is that it was hard to get removed by my doctor. Multiple appointments and one really rude OB.

You don’t ever want to go on the pill again- I was on Skyla for 6 years- it was good but tbh I will never go on hormonal birth control again- it raises your risk of breast cancer for the next 11 years even after it’s gone… I am looking into options now as the year before pregnancy I went natural and did natural family planning- now looking into paraguard- haven’t made a decision yet. Try to go on the lower dose possible if you have to Skyla is lower- DO NOT do Liletta ( cheaper brand) it ruined my life for 5 months

I had it pre pregnancy for 10ish years between 2 devices. Just had my first baby almost 8 weeks ago. I absolutely loved it zero complaints. Not having a period was amazing. I am going in the morning tomorrow to actually get another put in.

I still had my period on it. It also made me lose a massive amount of hair (I had a mullet at one point no joke), and it made me go absolutely insane. I could not control my emotions at all. The doctor kept telling me to give it more time give it more time after 2 years I pulled it out myself. I went on low dose bc pills (lo estrin). No side effects for me at all. I loved them.

I got the Mirena at my 6 week post baby appt. I like it just fine. No periods, and since we just had babies it doesn't hurt nearly at all to get it inserted. The only downside was that the string that hangs down through the cervix takes a few weeks to soften and it bothered my husband when we had sex by scratching him.

@Alyson I’m so on the fence about starting it. I would rather not loose a bunch of hair. Mine is super thin as it is lol. And not being able to control your emotions… that’s rough. I wish birth control didn’t have side effects like that.

@Bailey Thank you for the feedback! I’m just trying to weigh my options but I’m thinking I’ll go that route. I like the idea of not getting a period. I’ll save some money not buying pads & tampons every month lol

@Michelle you can always have it removed if you start getting side effects, just make sure your doctor listens to you. Mine didn’t. That’s why I took matters into my own hands lol

Just got the Mirena today I was terrified to get an IUD but it wasn’t so bad I’m curious to see if there are any side effects

I love the Mirena IUD. It’s the one and only birth control I’ve ever used since I was a teenager and will continue . I have my 6 week’s appointment next week which I’ll be getting back on it. No periods, no cramps, maybe spotting but other than that, it’s good (at least for me). Oh, being intimate with my husband is never an issue and no pregnancy scares!

@Michelle just got home from getting it. No issues. Isn’t fun but also isn’t the worst. My dr mentioned that it tends to be a little less unpleasant if you went thru labor. I had a scheduled c section. She mentioned bleeding could be all over the place for up to 3 months but after that it should heavy decrease or go away. When I got my first one 10+ years ago I think it took a few months for my period to go away. But once it did I didn’t come back until just now postpartum. I was only off the iud for less than 3 months before I got pregnant and didn’t get my period back in that time. So the postpartum bleeding and my first period wasn’t enjoyable.🤣 plus having to buy all the supplies that I haven’t bought in so long. In short I really recommend it and like others mentioned you can get it removed at anytime if you don’t like it. But at least give it a chance if you decide to get one.
