Glucose test

Just a quick one, to let anyone who has a glucose test coming up and really isn’t looking forward to it- for whatever reason. Whether it be anxiety over having to sit in a waiting room for 2 hours. Fears of blood tests. Worrying you might be sick etc. you CAN ask to do a week worths of blood testing at home. I was terrified of the glucose test for anxiety reasons and also because having my blood taken doesn’t really work (I have very delicate veins and most of the time can’t have blood taken). I spent weeks worrying about it but was also too nervous to ask my midwife for the alternative. I finally did ask and straight away she said she’d email the department at the hospital and that I could test for a week at home with a blood monitor they provided. Just wanted to let anyone know who might be in a similar position to what I was in xx

This is so funny as I was just talking to my husband about mine on Monday and how they can never get bloods from me so god knows how they will do 2 within 2 hours 😣 Also not quite sure how I'm going to be able to fast from 11:30pm the night before until after the test is over 😩 I've got an appointment with my consultant tomorrow so I might check with them if I can do the alternative! X

Had mine this morning and reading this now, I wish I had spoken up. My veins are also very delicate and they had to attempt 6 times this morning. I left there with very sore arms.

@Katie that’s exactly how I felt! Was worried as I have to eat before I even leave my bed and I knew it would’ve been impossible to have 2 blood tests in 2 hours! They barely even got enough from me at my 12 week scan for the Down syndrome screening!! Definitely worth asking, just explain your concerns xx

@Pamela I’ve had very bad blood test experiences before and knew it would be a struggle! Honestly I was so scared to speak up but I knew I had to and it worked in my favour xx

I asked to test bloods at home and midwife checked and said it’s not possible and scared me into taking the drink test by saying I def had it because of sugar in my urine

(I’m in Scotland and she just said ‘might be different in England but we only accept the standard test here drink up’)

In Bolton (greater Manchester) they didn't make me do the drink! They said their process changed during covid and now they compare the fasted blood with blood tests they've taken in previous appointments, so i only had to have one lot of blood taken!. It's definitely doable, interesting that no other trust seems to have got rid of the drink....

i had this option with my first as it was during covid and they didn’t want you waiting around with other people during the test so at home monitoring was ideal, i asked if i could do the same thing this time round but the midwife said it wasn’t as accurate so she’s still pushing me to have the drink🙃
