Reflux

Has anyone had a baby that really suffers with reflux? My little boy is terrible at bringing his wind up… he burps every so often but about half an hour after a feed he’s crying in pain.. I currently use infacol… don’t know if that’s working, Not sure what else I can try… I’ve used the same milk since birth any ideas please????

Book a GP appointment and get them to prescribe you baby Omeprazole or Gaviscon

@Donna Woods doesn’t that cause constipation though?? Xxx thank you!

Yep gaviscon causes constipation! Give half doses! My kid still suffers at 9 months old. Omeprazole works for some people but my kid reacted badly to it. Now i’m just riding the storm and hoping it gets better the more he’s on solids. Hang in there love i know its rough!

You could also use gripe water, it helped my boy to bring up his wind we have it to him before every feed like 5 minutes beforehand and when you feel his bringing up his wind more you can slowly start giving him less and less:) hope it helps!

@Lola thank you so much! I’m so pleased it isn’t just me in the nicest possible way!! It’s so hard isn’t it 😔

@Anna thank you!! I will go and buy some. Can I use it as well as infacol? Xx

Yeah I started of using infacol first because my mum said it’s good but when Asda didn’t have it in stock I got gripe water and then when they had it in stock again I got infacol and gave him both! It does seem like that he likes infacol more haha! I don’t know if it helps with solids though because my little one is not that far yet!xx (don’t want to promise you anything if it doesn’t help with solids)

@Anna my little one is only 10 weeks old xx

My little one is 9 weeks so yeah just try gripe water and infacol and if both don’t help make an appointment with your GP hope I could be helpful for you hun xx

@Anna thank you hun I’m going to ring health visitor in the morning xxx

My little girl has had the gaviscon since she was about 3 weeks old. Started half a sachet twice a day then went up to 1 full sachet with her first bottle of the day and then one full sachet with her last bottle of the day from 8 weeks. Shes recently started having 180ml bottles 5/6 times a day as she’s been getting griping pains from her reflux with the higher milk amount so I now give her gaviscon in every other bottle (so usually around 3/4 times a day). She still empties her bowels once daily (normal for her) and has never suffered with constipation. They can prescribe laxatives if needed though my little girl has never needed them. We use infacol too or the dentinox colic drops if there is no infacol in stock. Hopefully you can manage your little ones reflux without the gaviscon, just wanted to make you aware though that if it is needed the gaviscon doesn’t always give constipation

My girl was suffering with reflux quite bad, we was using infacol but it didn't seem to help at all and I was told it is more used for colic and trapped wind. My girl doesn't have an issue with getting her wind up it's just the reflux part, but it was suggested by my health visitor to try carobel which is a thickener for milk, its branded by cow and gate and you can purchase it from a pharmacy. I get mine from Tesco pharmacy and it costs just under £6 for a box which lasts me around 2 weeks each time. My girl has been a lot better since using it, not bringing up any milk and just seems to be a lot more comfortable, the only thing was for the first couple of days it caused her to be a little constipated but after she got used to it she is back to her normal routine. I would suggest giving it a go if you can xx

Is she on formula because I’d try changing that if she is. Also could try Colief but that wasn’t much help for my LO. Tried it for just over a week.

Also try and keep her upright and gentle back rub after a feed.

I had this issue to, my son was awful, really struggled with tummy ache and being sick after every feed.I went to the gp and they said we can try anti reflux formula, we did and it’s worked really well for him xx

My little girl has reflux. Infacol didn’t help as reflux babies are usually better bringing up wind slowly and infacol combines it to be brought up all at once which can make acid worse. We used gripe water as it is warming and soothes pain not targets wind, although does help with it. Our little girl is now on carobel which we order - you can get it on prescription but they tend to do everything else first. We chose to take this route as she suffers with constipation already and using thickener means we can give her a “normal” bottle so help her to go to the toilet if needed. Also means we can grab pre made bottles if we are caught out and just use the thickener in those (we had an unexpected hospital stay in February where we did this). Carobel can also be used in breast milk, and can also be put in purées etc when weaning so it seemed the most logical solution to us - at the time I was pumping also. Hope this helps hun xx
