We tried it first with our dog to make sure it didn’t make his behaviour worse as some dogs can get worse after being castrated. He’s had it done medically twice now and only had positive reactions from it and we’ve decided to go ahead with getting a full castration
the pros of chemical castration is that it is reversible (whereas surgical obviously isn’t) however regardless of how you do it, it’s always important for your dog to learn obedience and social skills (this is why dogs tend to have behavioural changes post-surgical castration as they’re not adequately trained to deal with the world around them) - the needle for the chemical castration is rather large, so bare that in mind if you already have an anxious/sensitive dog. depending on your dog’s breed will also depend on the age in which you choose to go for surgical castration (their joints don’t grow properly if castrated too soon) - it’s definitely worth trying the 6-month implant and carrying on with behaviour training. it is expensive in the long run, however once you’re confident that your dog can deal with his “doggy emotions” then you can make your decision 🙂 hope that helps xx
Vet here! 👋🏻 It will only make himworse if he is anxious as they rely on their testosterone to help their confidence. If you do decide to trial the chemical castration but are having really negative effects it can be removed (as it is an implant) but would require a little surgery to do so xx
Hey, I did it when my dog was 1y.o. I was told the same as you; to be honest, it didn't change my dog. Currently, I've got a trainer for my dog, and he says it's money waste. You are better off just doing a full castration once your dog pees every time with a leg up (usually around 2 years of age). Good luck!
