I had one at 19. They couldn’t get it in first try for me which was very uncomfortable (turns out I’m at a dodgy angle down there!) so I had to go back and get a doctor with an ultrasound who then placed it so quickly! I did have a few days of cramping after but I had more and worse cramping with the failed insertion. I ended up having it for 11 years, but after 2 years my periods were too long and painful (I was prone to these anyway, and knew it was a potential side effect of the copper coil). So I spoke to my doctor and they put a hormonal implant in to see how I got on with it as they wouldn’t interact so I could have both. That combo ended up working so well for me that I didn’t get it out til I needed to 🤷♀️
I have had 3 coils the first time it was put in it was agony but that was because they didn't numb me or anything. My coil moved and caused so much pain so I had to have it taken out and reput it. It happened again but when it was put back in they used some spray and didn't feel it. It did make my periods very heavy at first but it settled x
Mine went in no problem, bit of cramping after but nothing crazy. It actually moved on its own accord but they scanned and said would be fine. When it was removed it didnt hurt at all which I was surprised at, was a little uncomfortable for a day or two and then no issues at all. Completely settled my periods with no side effects so would deff get again
@Charlotte this is what I’m worried about because I think I’m also a dodgy angle too😅. Do you think I should just go for it anyway? Let the nurse do it and just pray for the best? Or should I just go straight to the doctors?
@Shanice yeah that’s another fear of mine, would it cause constant pain? Or would it come and go?
@Katy did you feel it move then asked for a scan?
At least if you know that you can say it straight away! I had no idea 🤷♀️ you can also speak up for yourself if it doesn’t work initially and say no I want a doctor, at 19 I had no idea about any of it and assumed that was how it went so I let them keep trying for nearly half an hour before they said no we can’t do it. I wouldn’t let that happen again now. Had a similar issue when they tried to use the balloon method of induction, but I was able to let them know and request a different method after two attempts. I also went to a sexual health clinic to do it, as my gp didn’t offer it at the time.
My friend had the copper coil, she said it was a bit uncomfortable when they first put it in & she experienced a bit of cramping but that’s completely normal. She said it’s been fine ever since & had no issues with it xxx
