Anti depressants and phased dosage

Has anyone been told by their doctor to gradually wean ON to antidepressants? I started taking citalopram about six weeks ago and initially because they made me feel worse, the doctor told me to take one every other day instead of every day. I started to feel better however, I’m now taking one every day and it’s made my anxiety and depression worse again. Does anyone else have experience like this? Is it just because I’ve upped the dosage?

I had to wean onto sertraline but I have odd reactions to medications. When did you start taking the full dose everyday? That'll be the date they work from. There also a possibility that if you felt OK on the off days (days of not taking meds) it might be worth returning to that after consulting with the Dr about it

Yes and Antidepressants can take 6 to 8 weeks to fully get into your system and start working properly. Unfortunately they dont make you feel better right away.. Dont give up, but also keep in mind it might not be the right medication for you and you might need to try another.

@Ebony I started taking the full dose Saturday just gone so about five days in now.

5 days isn't long enough for it to establish in your system so you may feel worse or off for a few days yet. In the UK, we're told meds take 3 weeks to establish in the system. For you it'll be 3 weeks from when you started the full dose without off days

@Ebony so is it normal for me to feel side effects like feeling lower if it isn’t established in my system? Thanks for advice

Yeah totally normal. You'll feel a bit yo-yoee for at least a week maybe numb some days an eventually you'll reach a stable place with the meds. I remember feeling really weird for the first week and a bit when I was on sertraline by end of week 2 I was feeling pretty good. When I was on fluroxitine (probably the wrong spelling) I was numb and emotionless for the 3 weeks after I started it

Citalopram didn't work for me. I felt weird and I couldn't feel emotions. I went onto fluroxatine after that and I was on and off that for over a decade. I've never been phased onto them though
