Mirena coil postpartum

Hi all, I am planning on getting the mirena coil put in over the next 2 weeks. I heard it's a good option postpartum which suits me as I didn't want to go back on the pill! Have any of you had any good/bad experiences with it and is it painful to insert?

For most insertion is painful. Ask your gp to a referral to a clinic that does local anaesthetic for it - the NHS does do this but you must request it in advance. In other countries this is standard practice! I’ve had four of them over the years, they were ok. Three were fine and one went out of place (not a nice experience!!). They do contain a hormone so personally I wouldn’t do it again but that’s because I find the progesterone that’s in them to make me mildly depressed. Everyone is different though and it’s definitely worth trying to see if it works for you!

Insert hurts so i would suggest get day or two off work as it was very unpleasant and painful for two days for me. I had it for about 6 months and felt soo depressed cried most of days out of nowhere, I was considering to go to therapy as I thought my life was just bad. Once I took it out it was all good so I would not go again for that. Plus in my case it hurt while having sex and apparently it was inserted properly so im not sure what caused that. :(

Thanks for reply guys! Gosh I thought the coil didn't really affect your overall moods as I thought the hormones were predominantly released down there rather than all over the body like the contraceptive pill! I am just 12 weeks post partum now but was considering getting it in next few weeks.. 🙈

I had coils before I had my baby and the pain was unbearable on insertion. I had the mirena coil fitted after I had my baby and there was no pain at all. I was shocked with how easy it was. I had really heavy periods and over a 12 month time scale, they have calmed down to a very manageable level. I would highly recommend this coil

I had the coil pre pregnancy. I found the hours after and a few days after uncomfortable and a little painful. I checked my strings regularly and had 1 scare of loosing them but was reassured after seeing a nurse who said sometimes they just wrap themselves up. There is a little more risk to them after having a baby so just make such your aware of these and what to look out for!

I was thinking about having the coil but after reading this post I won’t be getting one.

I had several pre pregnancy. Ages 19-37 and never found them painful, yes it was uncomfortable but not painful as such as it’s so short lived. This hugely depends on the skill of the person inserting I think. Everyone will feel differently though. I have mild cramping after, I would try to be home after just to be able to put my pjs on and just chill. They balanced out my moods and I practically never had a period which was great as they were awful before.

@Siobhan I tried the mirena coil a few years ago and took it out because the hormones made me depressed and I had water retention. So I changed it for the non hormonal coil and had it many years until I wanted to get pregnant, and I was so happy with it. I will have it fitted again postpartum. Highly recommend it

@Carmen thanks so much for reply! What is the non hormonal one??🤔🤔

@jess oh this is reassuring thanks!

@Siobhan the copper coil. It can make periods heavier but there’s no hormones at all.

I don’t have the mirena coil but I do have the copper coil! I actually found that the insertion was not painful at all really! My gp numbed my cervix and the insertion included a feeling mild period cramping, which got slightly worse the next couple of days and did bring on a period but it was totally manageable. Honestly the worst part of it was the speculum for me! But that’s just because I had a 4th degree tear during birth so was a little tense and obvs scar tissue x

Was uncomfortable not painful as they numbed it. Best contraception I’ve tried x

Thanks for the replies🙏🙏 I did give birth with no pain relief so I'm sure I will manage the insertion part please god lol🤣 I'm going to get it now its just whether I go for copper or mirena!🙈 I'm not a massive fan of periods in general so heavy ones which I believe you get with copper coil don't sound fun to me😩

@Siobhan sorry, the copper coil. I couldn't remember how it's called
