Birth Control after Pregnancy

Hi everyone, I'm 36 and want to avoid another accidental pregnancy. Previously I wasn't using birth control because I didn't like taking a pill everyday, and it affected my libido. I want to try an IUD and I want it to help regulate my moods. Previously, hormones prior to menstruation would cause me to be very irritable and moody. My OB recommended Mirena, Skyla, and Kyleena. I'm 3 months PP, what do y'all think I should do? How was your experience with an IUD? Thanks! Lindsay

I have been on mirena for years and love it. I don't even get a period anymore it's great 😆

I had the Mirena before my most recent pregnancy and just had the Kyleena inserted in March when I was 3 months PP. I have no complaints about either. I've had a lot of spotting since the insertion in March but it's starting to become very light and infrequent. I'm also breastfeeding and haven't seen any impact on my milk supply in case that is a concern for you. With the Mirena I was one of those lucky 🙄 women that still had a period but they were extremely light and lasted only 3 days.

I just got a Skyla as I had a cesarean almost 4 months ago and need to wait at least a year to conceive again. The Skyla is the smallest & has the lowest dosage of progesterone, it lasts for 3 years. Since the hormones are localized you shouldn’t have a systemic problem like you would with oral contraceptive. As a note because I’ve never seen anyone mention this. More than likely your provider will tell to abstain from sex two weeks prior to the IUD insertion & then a week afterwards to avoid a potential infection. My husband was not thrilled about that at all! lol Also you’ll get cramping & bloating the first few days. I feel fine now. I would ask your OBGYN to prescribe you an 800MG ibuprofen to take 30 min prior to your appointment.

I've was on the mirena for 10 years before removing it to get pregnant. I just got another one inserted (I'm 7 months pp) and it slid in like butter after a vaginal birth haha My doctor wouldn't insert it until I was after 6 months pp because your cervix and uterus are still vulnerable and very soft until then, and inserting it can damage them. Theres also a much higher risk of your body expelling the IUD when its done before 6 months pp It is localized progesterone and yes there is spotting off and on for up to 6 months after inserting it which a lot of women find frustrating. I rarely got a period once it was inserted and when I did it'd be spotting for a few days sporadically. I strongly recommend it but would wait a few months before getting one inserted.

I loved it! So much easier than the pill and with less side effects

I’m 35 & had my last daughter in August of last year. I got the Liletta iUD in October. I’ve had maybe 2 periods since then. Zero complaints.

I had Mirena and it was the worst decision I ever made. I immediately gained 30 pounds, this was before I had a kid. My ovarian cysts were worse. My husband said he would feel it during sex. When I went to get it removed a year later it was already implanting in my uterus so my on had to scrape it out. The second it was out I lost a ton of weight and felt soo much better. My friend who had it mentioned always having weird abdominal pain that immediately went away when hers was removed as well. It can be a great solution for some, but I have heard of a lot of horror stories with it as well.

I got a copper IUD (if you want a hormone free option). I had 1 for 10 years and loved it. Then just got another 2 weeks ago at my 6w postpartum visit.

I got the liletta in January. I've had one period since. Absolutely no complaints, it's been great

I have the Paragard which is the hormone free and I’m happy with it so far, I got it at my 6 week appointment. My period is normal as has always been, I haven’t noticed any significant side effects

Personally i I opt for the copper iud. Its non hormonal.

Thanks everyone, I think I'm going to ask about Skyla. I'm only 3 months PP, so I'll wait for the 6 month mark. Great tips and recommendations!!
