To lube or not to lube? 🤔 When trying for a baby, sex is often on the tabs, either weekly, or daily, but often on a schedule. One of the things that can make it better, is a simple addition — the lubricant. But here’s the thing: not all lubes are sperm-friendly. And especially when trying to conceive (when you want the sperm to swim until the egg), you’ll want a fertility lubricant to help speed things along. There are many lubricants out there, from natural to oil, water, or gel-based ones. But if you’re wondering which ones are best left on the racks, which are fertility-friendly, and which ones should be on your checkout page, we’ve got you.
In this article: 📝

What is a fertility lubricant?

Fertility lubricant is a specially designed type of lube that helps make sex more comfortable, pleasurable, or simply better, for both parties. They’re usually approved by the FDA and are sperm-friendly, so they’re made to help you get pregnant, not hinder it. Unlike normal lubricants, fertility lubricants are formulated to mimic your body’s natural cervical mucus and have a pH similar to semen. But how does this help?, you ask. Well, it helps sperm in their journey to meet the egg. As these lubes don’t have any harmful additives, like the ones typically found in standard lubes, they’re often sold under the tags “TTC lube”, “pregnancy lube” or “fertility-friendly lube”.

What does a fertility lubricant do?

Fertility lubricants tend to bridge the gap for a few different TTC situations, like
  • If you’re on Clomid, a type of fertility medication, one of the side effects can be vaginal dryness, which can cause some discomfort or even pain during sex. You can ease penetration by lubricating your vaginal area using the fertility lube of your choice.

  • Making a more comfortable, pleasurable time in the bedroom — the pressure to “perform” for both of you can be pretty intense when you’re trying for a baby.

  • Creating an environment that’s beneficial for sperm motility and survival, making it easier for them to swim through the cervix, and uterus and reach the egg.

How does lubricant affect fertility?

Well, lubricants don’t directly impact fertility. But standard lubes can have negative effects when you are trying to conceive. There are some lubes that affect your vaginal pH in women, making it a non-helpful environment for sperm to swim through. And, for some people, certain lubes can cause irritation if there’s a reaction to any ingredient. For men, certain lubricants affect their sperm by slowing them down, or even killing them. That’s why choosing the right fertility-friendly lubricant is essential for those baby-making nights!

Does lube kill sperm?

Not necessarily. All lubes affect sperm to some extent when exposed for a longer duration, whether they’re silicone, oil, or water-based lube. But not all lubes are created equal — some may affect sperm more than others. Certain lubricants affect sperm by decreasing how long they live and how fast they swim, which affects whether they can reach the egg after swimming through the uterus. Your best bet to avoid these effects when trying to conceive is to go for fertility-friendly lubricants. These don’t have a toxic effect on sperm — instead, they make the environment more favorable for the sperm to swim up to the egg.

How do I know if my lubricant is sperm friendly?

So how do I even select a sperm-friendly lube? To make it easier, here are a few things to look out for:
  1. An FDA-approved label with an FDA-approved symbol, rather than just claims of being “non-spermicidal”.

  2. Labels on the packaging such as “fertility-friendly lubricant,” “lube for conception,” “fertility lube,” or “sperm-friendly lubricant for fertility”

  3. pH: A sperm-friendly lubricant mimics the pH of the semen and the cervical fluid, so it should ideally be around 7, or neutral.

  4. Avoid ingredients like silicone, petroleum, N-9, vegetable oils, parabens, or fragrances as these are known to harm sperm. Some studies also recommend going for lubes that are glycerin-free.
Lubes that pass these checks have also passed laboratory tests to be deemed sperm friendly, and give you that assurance of safety.

Does fertility lube actually work?

That depends. The thing about fertility lube is, it doesn’t really change anything about your fertility or chance to conceive. Rather, it works by providing a favorable environment for the sperm. Here’s how it works:
  • Sperm enter the vaginal canal once ejaculated

  • They travel through the cervix, uterus, and fallopian tube, to reach the egg and fertilize
Now, the first step is where fertility lubes actually help. At a pH of 7.5-8.2, sperm sustain no damage and can swim through the cervix region more easily. This is why non-fertility or standard lubes aren’t preferred during TTC as they don’t help. They tend to reduce the number of sperm that survive, thus leading the sperm to not swim through, or reduce the total number of sperm that reach the egg.

#TTC Tips: HOW I got pregnant

I got pregnant in the first/second month of trying to conceive. My bf and I had stopped being cautious months back, but hadn’t “really tried” yet, and it took about 1-2 months of TRUE trying to get me pregnant. (I was disappointed each month I didn’t get pregnant before but realized later it’s because I wasn’t REALLY trying.) I want to share a few tips because I feel like the methods I used (many of which were taken from your advices on here) really worked and are (along with the grace of God!) what got me pregnant. 1. Calculate Conception Window. (I did this by googling ovulation calculator and just entering my dates.) 2. Take the Window SERIOUS. This is THE ⏱ TIME. 😆 Its critical days so don’t take them lightly or let them pass you by. I let my partner know when the window was and reminded him daily 😁 We made sure to have daily special time together (almost) each day during my estimated fertile window, also days before, and days after window, incase the calculator wasn’t quite right. 3. Make Loveee...I know this seems a little obvious but I feel like if you’ve been trying for a while conception attempts can become a “to do” list thing. I feel like what really made the difference was not making it a chore. Each time we BD my bf was so loving. It was all him, so after me, testosterone running high, and I think letting him know I was fertile and him just sensing it made him crazy. (this helps!) I really got to be on the receiving end of pleasure which made me very relaxed and I swear the (sorry TMI!) but the warmness of his tongue inside me and familiarity of him taking care of me relaxed me and opened my cervix more than usual before he came in. It was recommended to me that I try “pushing” during this part to begin “opening up”. (Make sure he doesn’t mind lots of fluid flow here) I let him know to expect a lot of wetness because I was ovulating. We made it a priority to give special attention to soften / prepare my cervix, rather than “just have sex”, this felt critical because my body felt “so ready” to receive. 4. Give him the Power. I run the house and our lives 😂 but with the Baby Dance I wanted to give him this time to have power over me. I imagined to have a baby he had to literally give me part of himself and I had to take it. And kind of thought of it as that and accepted being a dominated “woman”. We BD doggy 🐶 every time and I just let him have as much as he wanted for as long as he wanted without trying to get creative and change positions or take any control at all. This spiked his testosterone. I could feel it and even taste it. 5. OPEN OPEN OPEN This I think is what really sealed the deal. This was essentially insemination. Sometimes I can’t tell when he’s ready to finish, other times I can. So I asked him to make sure he tells me. (He would do so by squeezing my hips) and when I would feel him squeeze, I would PUSH like a kegal push OPEN and hold it push push push. It’s actually very orgasmic for both and I highly recommend trying this! Bear down pushing cervix open, arch your back, lean into him and push from inside as he releases pushing his tip to the deepest part, docking it on cervix. The tip I was originally read was “testes to vulva, press, release, semi withdraw, enter, press release” aka ‘push to balls deep’ in lamens terms. Bearing down on him feels like a squeeze on his end. This is definitely what (scientifically) got me pregnant, when he finished, while I was doing this, opening my cervix dialating it for him with him docked on it squeezing my hips while I was bent over and him releasing semen. (Phew! 😓) I was told by a nurse that having your V area swollen and ready to receive (via the prep work he put in) and then making sure cervix is open makes all the difference as opposed to “just having sex” and seeing where it goes. This made sense to me. 6. CLOSE CLOSE CLOSE Ok! Now quickly - after you push and after he finishes you have to imagine a sucking in your gut motion (but really sucking in your cervix). Try contractions as soon as he withdraws from you. Keep doing it. Vaginal sucking in/pulsation motion. I would lie down to breathe and rest and let him get up to drink out of a gatorade in the fridge, gladiator that he is, and just keep doing my sucking in motion within as I lie down with knees bent, relaxing. (I was also advised by many of you to do frog position here!😂) I just chilled but frog I bet definitely works too. 7. Netflix and Chill Sounds funny but I knew I needed to lie still (per many of you guys tips) so we would just put on the TV and lie close together. I didn’t get up to use the bathroom to clean up like I usually do, I just waited a while. 8. When I went to the toilet - nothing came out! I knew this was a good sign. There was no leakage of him coming from me. It was all in, baby! 🤣 I knew my sucking in the gut kegals had worked because nothing from him came out. 9. Just TWO weeks later / 3 days before my period was due, I KNEW I was pregnant! I knew before the test. You’ll know. 😉🥰 I wanted to share these tips because this (almost) instantly worked for me! Thank you to everyone who shared their tips with me in discussion boards when I had asked! They worked! Baby dust to all ! #TTC If you had a similar experience or tried different methods that worked too feel free to share so others can try your methods too! Before I had success I was doing just a few things different and I think that’s what was holding me back. ———— UPDATE!! May 2021 I am now 3 months pregnant with my SECOND child (our daughter is 7 months old) I used most all of these techniques again, 3 months post partum. This time however we opted for trying a very different position, with male on top, doing a recommended technique called: 10. MATING PRESS. “mating press” (lol) which is basically intense style #missionary only, where lying on back legs are in air very bent to shoulders and held back, pinned down by his hands, woman is totally exposed and vulnerable to his penetration, male pushing as deep as he’d like here (so be careful some of us! Oof) and ultimately docking on cervix hard, with lots of possible bearing down from the woman in return (pushing back / with firm vaginal gripping from woman, and kegal contractions to toy while he’s within) all during days of ovulation, push cervix open, dialate and hold while male finishes, docks on cervix, then at his retreat, same technique cervix close contracting V as male withdraws. We prepped my body to receive the same way as before - basically deep tongue to soften, swell and dialate cervix (sorry sooo tmi but my BFF OB nurse friend originally recommended this and it works exactly as it should) My husband believes that a lot of getting pregnant is in the prep work, he has carefully almost mastered readying the cervix simply by acknowledging it and giving it attention and swelling me. It was actually again our second try at TTC during ovulation and he was able to quickly impregnate me again using these methods. Given that I had had a csection in October and got pregnant 4 months later in March, #MatingPress felt like the best position for #TTC because my body was comfortably pinned while laying down / stabilized not bouncing around. (Though I “feel” fully healed) I wanted to becareful when breeding because “the polls” suggested I not let him get me pregnant again until 2years healed. (That’s so long!?) Also each time my husband wishes to BD he doms with the intent to get me pregnant again so it would be hard to put off getting pregnant again for two years. I wanted to add an artsy photo of #matingpress because it’s soo good for getting pregnant, it’s right down to business as the name states and as simple as it is, we had not applied it before.. but all the images are pretty dirty. Will let you google 😉 Basically if you aren’t trying to get pregnant, never do this position 😂. We also thought this position might produce a different gender! This is a #myth! We are having another girl. Best of luck to all #TTC! Please continue to share advice for others. So happy to see so many pregnancies resulting from tips in post #1!! Xo . xX

How to use fertility lubricant

Using fertility lubricant is as simple as it gets. You can start by applying a teaspoon-sized amount of the product to your hands, rub them together, and apply on your genital area or your partner’s. You can also reapply as much as you like. Based on the type of products, some brands may even provide an applicator that helps you insert the lube into the vagina. Typically, it’s best to apply them just before sex, to make the experience more pleasurable, without compromising sperm health.

Which lubricant is best for fertility?

If you’re trying to conceive, the best lubricants to go for are the ones that are FDA-approved as “fertility-friendly”. Here’s a small checklist of what to look for while picking the best lubricant for your fertility, along with some top picks from this study: Top picks for fertility lubricants: Pre-Seed™, YesBaby™, Johnson’s™ Baby Oil, and SAGE™ Culture Oil. ✅ Deemed fertility-friendly by the FDA. ✅ pH that matches semen and cervical fluid (7 or neutral). ✅ Contains hydroxyethylcellulose. ✅ Osmolality of 285-295 mOsm/kg, which means that the hydration levels are the same as the vaginal tissue. This isn’t an exhaustive list, just a few pointers that can help you pick the best lubricant that helps with conception. It’s also possible that some sperm may have been exposed to standard lube for a shorter time, water-based lube, or maybe some semen parameters could withstand the detrimental effects of lube. But especially for couples with infertility trying to conceive on natural cycles, or mild to moderate male infertility, the best choice is fertility-friendly lubes. Studies that checked sperm performance when exposed to lube also found that oil and silicone ones fared better than water-based lubes. Our absolute top picks? Well, based on the studies, we recommend PreSeed, with Conceive Plus as a close second.

Is coconut oil a good lubricant for fertility?

While coconut oil is a popular natural lubricant, there aren’t a lot of studies about how exactly coconut oil impacts the vaginal environment as well as the sperm, and if it’s safe. There was a study that compared its counterparts, sesame and mustard oil as a lubricant, but they were found to reduce sperm motility. So, coconut oil? Great for personal care, but its effectiveness as a fertility lubricant remains a subject of debate. Our verdict? 👩‍⚖️ It’s best to err on the side of caution, so we still recommend using purpose-made fertility-friendly lubes over coconut oil.

What lube to avoid when trying to conceive?

When trying to conceive, it is best to avoid certain standard lubricants. Here are our notes, so grab a pen! ❌ Yes™, Sylk™, KY Jelly™ and Forelife™ ❌ Vegetable gums and fruit extracts in the ingredient list. ❌ pH that matches the vaginal area (3-4.5) that can be harmful to sperm. ❌ Contains silicone, N-9 (spermicide), glycerin, parabens, or petroleum. ❌ Lubricants with high osmolality, which can disrupt sperm function. It’s best to always read the product labels and prioritize fertility-friendly lubricants that are lab-tested and formulated to help your journey to conception.

Whether you’re looking to spice up those bedroom sessions or those baby-making nights, your choice of lube matters. Fertility lubricants can help optimize your chances of conception by supporting sperm health and mimicking the natural cervical mucus. Ultimately, it’s all about creating a sperm-friendly environment. And with the growing range of fertility lubricants out there, it can be tricky to choose the one that’s right for you.
