I’d wait until after paid leave to tell them
Girl I have to be honest, this sounds risky. I would wait until you complete your paid maternity leave to formally resign. Plus you have the right to have unpaid leave for up to 12 weeks.
Would definitely wait until after you use all your leave to tell them.
I don’t see it as risky right now, it took us a really long time to let go of someone else recently
He can’t deny my unpaid leave, he just prefers I didn’t do it. Luckily I’m hourly and can use PTO, salary employees have to get manager permission to use FTO. And he can’t fire me during leave because of CFRA. I have a good relationship with him and my team
I want to give him advance notice so if I decide to come back, I’m still on good terms and he can look for two new hires instead of just one that we are starting to interview for. His wife is currently pregnant so I’m sure he will understand
For reference, I work for a FORTUNE500 type of company as an engineer that really cares about employees. They need a lot of proof before they terminate someone, and can’t just take someone’s word.
I hear you want to respect this manager and what sounds like a good company. Just be careful. If you resign, you give up unemployment and a slew of other benefits. If you want to write a resignation letter, specify your last day of employment… and I’d make sure that last day is after you return from all of your time off.
@Haley this is good info! I plan on telling him in person of my plan. Maybe I should write the resignation letter 2 weeks before my last day of leave?
Update, I told my manager this week that next Friday is my last working day but I will complete my maternity leave before completely resigning. He’s happy for me and is happy I told him earlier because now he can interview for 2 candidates instead of just 1. (Someone else recently left the team). He said I absolutely deserve all of my leave and he even asked if I wanted to use my leave to keep my benefits longer. Love my manager, makes it so hard to leave
He suggested submitting to HR 2 weeks before my leave ends just in case I change my mind lol
I accepted another job btw
