Redundancy

Good afternoon By company has just announced that they are making redundancies across the business. They hav already approved my maternity cover and they are due to start in a couple of weeks. Does that mean they can't legally make me redundant? Just want to know my right as a 'just in case'

Unless your business is closing down or are moving location where you can’t travel to or they need fewer employees for existing work, then yes you are fully protected during pregnancy, maternity leave and also 18 months after baby is born - this means they can’t make you redundant because you are pregnant, on Mat leave or just returned from mat leave. If it’s a genuine redundancy situation and your role has been selected, you have the right to be offered a suitable alternative vacancy. Hope that helps!

My company has done exactly the same thing! They have supplied me with info on suitable alternative roles & I’ve been given one without any faff of applying, interviewing, etc. You are legally very protected while pregnant so try not to stress (easier said than done I know!) There’s a great charity called Pregnant than Screwed who you can always contact for free advice & I also found the Acas website helpful. X

My husband works in HR, I will ask him when he gets home! Xx He said the above two are right, and had nothing to add 😂 Xx

They can make you redundant but they have to offer you a suitable alternative if there are any available. If there are, you will be given priority over non protected employees. If there are no suitable alternatives, then yes you can be made redundant
