SDI vs PFL

Hi I was wondering if you can apply for both sdi and pfl or is there a time frame where I can use the sdi/pfl and use the other right after? Basically i dont know which to apply for first bc my job doesn’t offer paid maternity leave and making that extra little income would help so much! Thanks! 😊

I think they are two separate types of leave that can both be applied for (separately) on the CA EDD website. It’s my understanding that you take STI first then PFL. Since I haven’t gone through this process yet, would love to get others thoughts too :)

You apply for disability then paid family leave , you get 4 weeks paid before your due date that you don’t get paid for of you take after you have baby, and 4-6 weeks after, I could be wrong don’t quote me. Paid family leave is 6 I believe and that’s a whole separate claim you have to file!

You can get 4 weeks paid before your due date & 6-8 weeks after having baby depending if you had a vaginal or cesarean delivery through SDI, you qualify if you’ve been working at your job 12+ months & they pay you up to 70% of what your pay is after you exhaust all of your disability benefits you apply for PFL which is an additional 8 weeks paid also 70% of your checks you can get 4 more weeks but those are unpaid

SDI first (you can take it 4 weeks before due date. Use it or lose it - you can't use it after the baby is born) and then 6-8 weeks (6 weeks if natural birth and 8 weeks for C-section). After that it's 12 weeks of PFL (only 8 weeks of PFL are paid)

PFL (bonding leave) can only be used after baby is born. You don't have to use PFL right away but it needs to be used within 12 months of when the baby is born
