Maternity Exemption Certificate

Found out I was pregnant on 8/9. Went to doctors on the 20/9 and paid for 2 x prescription which was £19.80. I told my doctor’s pharmacy that I was pregnant but didn’t have my mat exemption cert yet. They said to keep hold of the card receipt for the payment and once I get the mat cert can claim it back as long as the mat cert covers the 20/09. - I’ve read online that I need a FP57 form though and should have been given at time of making payment? - do you go to a pharmacy to claim the refund back or is it done another way? Thanks ☺️

You won't get your maternity certificate (Mat B1) until 20+ weeks. It's really odd because it's usually the thing that gets you free dental care, free prescriptions, free swimming pool in some areas but they don't issue it until quite late in! That said, I picked up a script last week and was fully prepared to pay and they said I didn't have to - my GP knew I was pregnant, the prescription was pregnancy-related and it was somehow already in the system (even though I didn't even have a booking appt yet!) Might be worth reaching out to your GP surgery and asking them what the procedure is where you are :) x

Your midwife should give you your exemption cert at your first appointment. Mine did it online immediately. It’s different to Mat B1

Last pregnancy I asked the pharmacy the same thing and they gave me a form - couldn't say what it was called but it was to come back with when I finally got my matb1. I never got to that point so didn't go back

I got mine at my first appointment
