Working from home

For those working from home due to childcare, what reasons are you giving your job? I’m looking for a remote job, and I’ve seen a few saying hybrid with option to go fully remote but not sure what to tell them my reason is for being remote if they ask. For context, my baby girl is 7 months and I’m not ready to put her in a nursery or childminders etc yet so wanting a job I can work from home whilst with her.

Id love to know 😉

Work from home jobs are to work there is an expectation you'll have childcare and the flexible working is for being closer to home, facilitating drop offs and pick ups and making life easier without a commute. What you're suggest will mean you're not fully present for your employer while on the clock and that's not really on and it's exactly why employers don't often want to offer fully remote which makes it harder for all of us. Be really careful as if they find out you don't have childcare they can terminate you as that's not really appropriate. I do get it, but unless you're only working a few hours and can do it around naps, it's probably not going to work I'm afraid. You can absolutely ask for flexibility for childcare and being a parent but having a child at home is a full time job as well especially when they are little! I say this kindly but this isn't really on lovely. Sorry, my opinion only.

I agree with the comment above, looking after a baby or toddler is a full time job and there’s not any working from home jobs (not any 9-5s anyway) that I can think of where you could be fully present and handle childcare 😔 I’ve known a couple of people in my office try and do this and not tell my team head, but it was very noticeable from how slow they were to respond, a drop in quality of work, and slow speed of completing tasks. I can completely understand why you would want this though, I think a lot of us do in an ideal world, I’m dreading going back to work and having to send my daughter to nursery

Like the other commenters have said, this doesn't really work with an employer. Exceptional circumstances maybe, if your kid gets sent home sick, but it's not fair to them day to day. That said, I work from home when my kids around. But I'm a freelancer, so I work during quiet moments and when they're asleep. So it can be done, but probably not for in the typical employment sense

My job is very flexible as has full remote contracts with manager sign off. I do 3 days wfh a week because in this city, childcare is over £100 a day, commutes are often 1-2 hours as the transport is crap (drop offs and pick ups don’t always work with that), I also parent alone for weeks at a time so I am the default parent and I cannot be 2 places at once. The head office at one point asked for everyone to be 3 days minimum in the office and I said “that extra day per week is over £7000 in childcare to me, so if you are willing to promote me to cover basic costs then fine”. They took the advice back xx

As said above remote jobs require your full attention and your employer would expect nothing less and assume you're child was in nursery. Saying that there are some Jobs out there which do work with children. For example I'm self employed within the energy sector and can work around my little boy (1 year) perfectly. If 5 like to message me, I'd be happy to give you more information about it.

I went back to work 9m PP, and my employer know we are doing the childcare at home. We still breastfeed and we just aren’t ready. Nor is it an option financially really, especially as my partner is at home during the day (he works nights). I do have her alone in the mornings and from about 3:30/4. By law now, you can request flexi working. So for us that sometimes looks like logging on a bit early to get bits done and doing an hour or so once she has gone to bed. My previous boss did all his childcare (baby + 2 kids) and kind of set the precedent. I work for a charity so we are very family oriented. As long as the work is done its fine. It depends on the employer!

I WFH’d with my little one for 6 months from 9 months old, it was a horrific and not manageable or fair on the child or employer at all. Gets harder as they get more demanding. I’m about to start a new full time remote role and little girl will be going into childcare

You can’t wfh and have a child in the background. I don’t suspect many jobs will allow that.

Wow I thought you’d be able to, this is good to know! Thanks everyone I guess it’s about finding a flexi job that can work around baby

A lot of jobs that are WFH I’ve noticed will now specify in the add that you still need to have sufficient childcare and child should not be present etc. which I assume they now do as they have realised so many of us would require a job whilst looking after baby z

I’ve worked from home for 3 years now, going back next week but my son will have to go to nursery there’s no way I could work and look after him. Most wfh jobs aren’t as chill as you would think

My husband works from home and its in his contract that no childcare can be taken place whilst he is working. Also he won't want to be working and looking after our daughter as either his work quality will drop, or his care for our daughter will drop
