Shared parental leave

If anyone is savvy with money stuff, please reply 😇 Shared parental leave is new to me and i’m keen to find out more. Sorry if my terminology is off below! I plan to take a year off. If we do SPL, when i ‘return to work’ (during school hols) does my partner HAVE to take that time off and have SMP for those weeks, or can he still work and we delay the SMP to later for me when i go back on Leave? He earns more than me so if the above is not possible, it wont make sense for us to do SPL. Also is shared parental leave worth it financially- if get 100% pay for 6-10 extra weeks, could it put my pay back into the taxable threshold for the tax year? I only get statutory pay throughout, and start mat leave the very beginning of march. I really appreciate any advice and insight Thanks!

I’m on mat leave at the moment and no your partner does not have to take any kind of leave when you ‘return to work’ during the holidays. SPL is 100000% worth it. Depending on when you start your leave will depend what holidays you get paid. I’m getting 3 weeks. But that’s only because I’m only taking 10 months or else I would have gotten 5 weeks at full pay. I’m ‘returning to work’ though the first week of Easter holidays and that will be paid at full pay. Google SPL for teachers and a company will do all the forms, a plan etc. Even liaise with your school if they’re difficult for I think it was £50.

SPL for teachers is purely because we don’t accrue annual leave like other industries. Other industries can tack this leave onto the end of their ordinary mat leave. We can’t. Hence why we get to use SPL the way we can. Other countries (speaking from experience. Born, raised and taught in Aus before moving here) you are paid a certain amount of school holidays. We don’t see these holidays otherwise. Why should we not see annual leave just because we’re in maternity leave?

DM me if you’d like to see the breakdown of my maternity leave (including SPL) that the SPL teachers did for me x

@Cassandra thank you so much this is so so useful!! Cant believe i didn’t know about it. I will message you! X

Look up Kinza Barrett at TeachersSPL - they do it all for you

It wa a honestly the best thing I did, it helped me so much during maternity! TeachersSPL did all my paperwork and it was worth paying for because it’s all so confusing

Wish we could have done it but found out that we didn’t qualify as my husband switched jobs at the start of my pregnancy when we didn’t know I was pregnant.

@Carys thanks very much! I’m going to get in touch with TeachersSPL next week so start the process!!

It is definitely worth it. I asked payroll for estimates for what I would look like if I took SPL. They helped me fill in the forms too and so far I’ve received the correct amount and will have had an extra 9 weeks full pay by the time I return which makes a huge difference x
