Maternity Allowance Help!

Hi all! Looking for some advice about applying for maternity allowance. I left my job that I had worked at for 2 years in September due to relocation. I was 22 weeks pregnant at the time. I have spent the past 8 weeks looking for a job (as the one I had lined up didn’t work out), I have finally found a part time job but I am now almost 30 weeks pregnant and exhausted. I was going to apply for maternity allowance either way, but I’m not 100% sure how it works. Am I better off taking this new job and working and apply for mat allowance or just applying for the mat allowance. Thanks in advance xxx

@Heshna I’m sorry to hear this!! Finding a job while pregnant is so so difficult. I hope any answers I get on here will be useful for you xxx

@Amy thank you hunny 🥺 its tough knowing theres no proper income 😟. Xx

Hi Amy, I know this time can be tough but I would get the part time job to start with and fill out the form as babies can be very expensive as well as being over simulated while being at home by yourself can be more difficult, I would recommend to get the part time job to help you stay social

If you’re not working your maternity allowance starts when you’re 29 weeks pregnant, so it would start straight away and you’ll then get it for the 39 weeks from now

I’m 29 weeks and I start my mat leave last Monday (28th) at 28+3. I was in a similar position had to apply for maternity allowance. I applied for maternity allowance on the 24th Oct and heard back 5th nov with my payments etc by text, I’ve been awarded the maximum amount which is £736.12 every 4 weeks. (This can be set at every 2 if you ring them). Because MA is classed as a benefit the likes of Universal credits means they will take this into account as earnings. If you’re single person living alone you will get a slight top up in UC depending on where you live. It’s worth doing the turn2us calculator for a rough idea as well. Hope this helps xx

@Ash Thank you!!!!!

@Sarah thank you very much! Xx
