Plus size

Anyone else plus size and pregnant and sick of hearing about it! I know being over weight and being pregnant can have its complications do I wish I was smaller before becoming pregnant yes, was I trying also yes I lost 2stone 8lb for my wedding and fell pregnant on honeymoon! Met an anaesthetist yesterday who was borderline rude! Told me I cant have a water birth (not a surprise to me) but said coz if I get into complications no one would be able to get me out…. I mean my husband defo would but ok! When checking my veins for canular etc I said oh usually people struggle to get blood from me… she said that does happen in obese people 🙃😂 then the absolute cherry on top was being told to join SlimmingWorld after I give birth 🙃🙃 I’ve cried all yesterday and this morning I feel so deflated I’ve actually managed my weight so well in pregnancy so far! For reference I’m a uk 18-20 not exactly staring on the next episode of my 600lb life 😂😂😂

I’m sorry you’ve had to go through that! I’m plus size ans not had any horrible comments yet however I mean the anaesthetist in a couple weeks!! I would be putting in a complaint if they were rude to you as they are there to reassure you not be rude!! Xx

@Chelsea my husband just held me while I was absolutely inconsolable last night I’ve always struggled with my weight and knew I’d encounter stuff like this but eugh pregnancy emotions on top it made me feel like shit! Told my midwife today who kinda listened but also said I can join SlimmingWorld while being pregnant…. Nearly told her to F off! Why they endorse SlimmingWorld ive no idea think anyone in nhs is on commission for getting folk signed up tbh 🙃🙃😂😂 I’m fully mobile and fit just coz you’re overweight doesn’t mean you’re a slob! Xx

That’s awful 🥺 especially when you’re already feeling soo vulnerable aswell!! I can totally understand why you were taken aback by it all. It’s just rude tbh. Urgh don’t get me started on slimming world it’s like a cult 🤣!! It annoys me that they think bigger women automatically should lose weight or will have complications when in reality majority of us are fit and healthy!! Xx

I had the exact same experience with the anaesthetist. I understand my weight can cause additional complications but theres a way to word things. End of the day pregnancy isnt their area of expertise and i will be taking what was said with a pinch of salt. My actual midwife hasnt made me feel so bad and thats the advice il be taking and listening to x

Erm fuck that. You say borderline rude but they were 100% rude and unprofessional. This goes against NHS core values and I would strongly advise you to make a formal complaint to patient services team (not PALS as they are informal). Water birth, yes you have to be a certain weight, they are quite strict with that, but getting blood is nothing to do with size (I mean maybe if you are 35 stone it could be difficult), and TELLING you to join slimming world is disgusting. What makes them think you want to lose weight after birth? What gives them any right to tell you what to do with your body? I am UK 16/18 but only time weight has been mentioned is around raised BMI, no one has said anything negative to me, which is how it should be. I imagine I’ll be seeing an anaesthetist at some point and I won’t tolerate being spoken to like I’m worth less than something who weighs less. I’m sorry you’ve been treated this way. On another note, have you joined the plus size pregnancy group on here? Xx

@Chelsea I hate SlimmingWorld I’ve done it 3 times over last 10 years does nothing for me other than damage my relationship with food! I just hope no one mentions out to me in labour coz they’ll have my husband to deal with! 😂😂 bmi is also so outdated I hate it! Xx

@Laura unfortunately she’s not the first person I’ve came across who’s rude on over weight women I had a sonographer too who was rude! 🙃🙃 I don’t mind people talking about it coz they have too just a way of saying stuff! They can shove SlimmingWorld up their arse 😂😂 xx

@Gemma they have to discuss higher BMI and any extra support you may need during pregnancy but that’s it. These people won’t learn or change if they aren’t called up on it, I know it’s hard and intimidating and if you don’t feel like you can say anything then ask someone else like your partner to. Pregnancy is so so difficult and you shouldn’t be made to feel even worse because of what your weight is. It’s 2024 and those “professionals” should know better. Next time anyone says anything like that to you just walk out the room 😆 xx

That is unacceptable. I've definitely had medically relevant conversations due to my weight but never SHAMED for it , including my birth preferences. I'm sorry you've had to deal with such awful people

@Laura exactly I don’t mind when it’s a medical reason behind the weight talk but mentioning SlimmingWorld is ridiculous!! I’m defo taking people with me to all appointments now coz I can’t bring myself to say out but I know others will! Xx

Wow! I cannot believe what I have just read😱😓deffo put a complaint in that’s awful how they’ve treated you and not right at all!

Yep I’ve had the same and I’m a size 14-16 they are so cheeky!! X

Well I was a 14 gone up to 16 since pregnant

No I just keep getting told I’m geriatric 🙃 sorry they’ve made you feel this way it’s hard enough with bodies changing etc.

My doctors are exactly the same. I’m sorry you’ve had to hold through this. I’m a U.K. 22-24 and they’ve been nothing but horrible this entire pregnancy. They’ve even gone as far as telling me I need a C-section because they might not be able to see the baby come out if I go natural ( I have a small apron belly but it really doesn’t cover anything ) I say don’t listen to them. They’re rude and insensitive. If you need or want anyone to talk to please message 💜
