Glucose tolerance test

For anyone who has to have this don't worry it's just a high concentrated version of a Capri sun drink 😋

How many weeks are you when you’re booked in for this please? 🙂 Midwife mentioned it to me at booking appointment but can’t remember if she said when to expect it. Seeing her on 5th December and I’ll be 25 weeks by then x

@Ruth so originally I was booked in for 24 weeks, but specialist midwife wanted me to do an earlier one at which I'm 20+4 weeks x

I’m assuming it’s different at every hospital because this isn’t the drink we got. We just got it in a plastic cup and it wasn’t even flavoured

@Natalya awww really, this is North tees hospital in Stockton x

Is this a standard test for all pregnancies? Or do you get referred if the midwife feels you need one? Xx

Were you automatically offered this or do you need to meet certain risk factors?

@Melanie I wish I had orange flavoured😂😂

Also to answer the other questions you only get refered if you’re either Overweight Have a family history of diabetes Have had gestational diabetes in a previous pregnancy Or I think it’s if you have sugar in your urine

Mine was in a big medicine looking bottle and was raspberry flavoured with our first but it wasn't that bad. I am also confused as to why I had it after talking to a midwife friend as I didn't meet any of the criteria 🤷🏻‍♀️ Its not been mentioned during this pregnancy

@Kelly it’s not offered in every pregnancy even though anyone can develop gestational diabetes, midwives just base it on whether you meet certain factors that say you will have more risk of developing GD. Factors such as being 40 and over, having a high BMI, if you already have diabetes unrelated to pregnancy, if one or both of your parents have diabetes, if you have had GD in other pregnancies, if you previously had a baby with a high birth weight and if you are of an black African or Jamaican background. I needed to have the glucose test as I am partly Jamaican.☺️

I’ve got mine in Jan at 28 weeks due to PCOS, I feel super sick if I don’t eat though because of HG so I’m terrified for it😅

@Amy-May I’m not sure if it’s available in all areas so I’m not saying it will 100% be available to you, but I have heard other women say that they feel the same as you, that they feel very sick when they don’t eat, and so they asked if they can instead do a finger prick test everyday for a week (I think it’s a week) and then give in their results when the week has ended. Again, im not sure if all areas offer this alternative but might be worth asking so you don’t have to feel unwell through fasting for the liquid test! I hope everything goes well for you ☺️

@chantelle ah thank you! I’ve heard one other lady talk about this but wasn’t sure how it worked. I have a consultant appointment Tuesday and might just ask to find out!

@Amy-May Yea I don’t really know how it works either as I only heard about it after having my glucose test so I wasn’t even able to ask for myself lol. Hopefully you can be offered that alternative though and you don’t have to feel awful through fasting for the liquid test. Good luck!! ☺️
