would you be upset if your mom didn’t support your small business?

backstory: i have a crochet small (very small) business. it’s a hobby that i absolutely love and am lucky to make a little extra money from it! anyways my gran is my biggest supporter lol she has ordered custom items and always shares my posts and gets her friends to buy stuff. my mom on the other hand hasn’t done anything to support me. i made her something for christmas last year and my sister told me she found it in the back of her closet.. it honestly hurts my feelings a bit. i can’t afford to buy christmas gifts for everyone so i plan on making gifts but why waste my time if it’s not appreciated? my mom and i have a rocky relationship but i wish she was more supportive 🫤 maybe i’m overreacting?

Maybe what you made wasn't her jam, and that's okay. I get that it hurts though. I'd just personally not make her anything. Maybe put together ingredients for a simmer pot.

Crochet isn’t for everyone… also it depends on what the thing is I guess. Personally I wouldn’t love crochet clothing, bags etc but love a blanket or soft toys

I wouldn’t be upset if she never supported I would have assumed she wasn’t interested so her not using it makes sense

@Chris i totally get that, but it was a makeup bag idk how she couldn’t like it or use it! especially after she said she loved it when i gave it to her.. like why couldn’t she just be honest lol

Crochet is not everyone’s cup of tea. Other than baby blankets and stuffed animals, I do not like it, nor would I buy it. I don’t promote any businesses at all on my social media, owned by a family member or friend, doesn’t matter, I’m not an influencer. Expecting people to buy things they don’t want, keep things they don’t want and help you promote your business is unfair and expecting too much.

@Daija makes sense.. it’s just when she says she likes my stuff then does stuff like that it’s like… why. just tell me you don’t like crochet

@Dana 🦅♥️🤍💙 that’s fair, but you don’t have to be an influencer to repost something to your story imo. idk if it was my kid, even as an adult i would support them and try to help. thanks for your perspective though, i’ll lower my hopes

When starting a business or even having a hobby, not everyone will like it or be supportive. And that’s okay. Just keep on doing you and receive energy from people who DO support you. When I think of what I’ve done in the past whether it’s parenting or for me, not everyone is on board with everything I do, but I do it anyway coz it makes me happy or it works for us. You do you. Even celebrities get hate mail and death threats every day. They just ignore them. Because the hate is only a minority. Crochet specifically isn’t for everyone. Even if you made candles, say, that’s not for everyone either. And that’s okay.

@Kellie thanks ❤️

:( maybe she meant that it's cute. I'd say it's cute because it probably is but I wouldn't use a crocheted make up bag because I personally like a material I can wipe off. Does she like to read? If so maybe a bookmark might be more her jam. But if she never says anything to you about your stuff I'd assume she just doesnt care for it. I wouldn't expect anyone to share my business on their socials. When I was making IDs for dogs and coasters my family never shared it. But asked for a few during Christmas 🤣 some people just don't share stuff like that. We can't expect people to move the way we move yk? I'm sorry thoug because as a mom, if my child was trying to make things to sell...if i thought they were good then I'd share it on my stuff so she can get that going. You could just talk to her. She's your mom. Let her know what it's okay if she doesn't like crochet stuff just to be honest with you so that you dont waste your time making her something she won't enjoy.

Maybe she likes it but not for her. Ex. My cousin designs clothes I think they’re cool but never bought any because it’s not my style

@Chris thanks for the reply ❤️ i guess i’m just unfairly comparing her to my gran. i appreciate your perspective

My mom is the least supportive person ever. I try to understand it’s not her fault she wasn’t raised that way however, it gets to a point where it goes beyond the way you were raised and to the point of wanting to be supportive. Sorry youre going through this op

People promoting your work is always appreciated. I can always give a like or definitely send people their way if someone asks, but if I was reposting on my fb wall all my friends' side gigs, my wall would look like a billboard. I have friends who sell amazing crochet, cakes or beautiful candles. I don't like crochet, candles and don't eat sugar, should I buy from them anyway to support their business? I would end up poor and with mountains of junk at home. Whenever I had a small business I didn't count with family and friends being my clients, they usually expect discounts, stuff for free or borrowed, not the ideal clients. I didn't miss their purchase and can't expect a business to be sustainable if people are buying from me to do me a favour. Maybe what you need to focus on is how to sell more.

@𝔾𝕚𝕤𝕖𝕝𝕝𝕖 i get you but i wasn’t talking about friends. i don’t expect to grow my business into something major it’s just a hobby that occasionally pays. i was just saying it’d be nice if my own mother was more supportive 🤷🏽‍♀️

Is she supportive on other ways?

My sister crocheted a scarf for me last Christmas. I love her to death but I’ve never worn it because it’s just not quite right for me. Maybe your mom should support you more but she also may not know how much it means to you.
