Returning to work but a different job in the NHS

Any NHS service is fine doesn’t have to be the same job/trust. I left the NHS completely at the end of my mat leave, the policy is so vague that it’s not actually enforceable/worth them enforcing. I planned to cover my ‘return to work’ period by working one month and the rest with leave but my manager told me there’s no point as they can’t charge me for my maternity leave anyway xx
