Oh man, I submitted my disability the last day I worked 10/28 and went online and it's still on my waiting period... my little guy just turned 1 month today.
Omg this stresses me out! I may try to go in person this week! I have tried so many times and can never ever get anyone. Insane we have to worry about this on top of everything else
My baby was born in March, didn’t get any payments until June. Then I had trouble getting my paid family leave, got denied at first but was finally able to get it. Tried calling but never got someone on the phone. The local offices for the state senators and assembly members sometimes have someone to help with this. You can try their local office as well
My baby was born in September. Just hit approved last week only because I had to go down to the office 3 times to follow up with my claim. I think that’s your only option because they never ever answer the phone
@Samantha just go in person, and go super early, like before they open.
@Samantha you should call your state representative if you’re having trouble. They have a direct contact with EDD and can help you with any issues
Thank you everyone for your help/advice! I’m definitely going to go in person to the local office!
Go in person! I got paid both times that way
I had to finally go down to the office. Expect to be there for a few hours, but they got everything taken care of super quick once seen!
I was able to call by using this third party that’s basically a robot and calls nonstop until you get on - https://eddcaller.com/. You have to pay like $10 but it actually works and I wish I had done it earlier. Just make sure you select the right department - Disability vs paid family leave depending on which part of leave you are on.
Is it disability the 4 weeks before and then turns into paid family leave after birth? Also a little confused on that part too?
It’s 4 weeks before + either 6 or 8 weeks after depending on if you had a vaginal or c section delivery.
Then you get 8 weeks of baby bonding via paid family leave in addition to the disability coverage above.
@Lauren I wish I knew about this one because I paid $25 to reach someone with Claimyr!

are you able to do it online? i did my entire process online and it was pretty seamless. it only took a day. maybe it’s different state by state, i’m not too sure. but i would definitely recommend seeing if you can do it online if you haven’t already and that option is available!
@Emily Hi! I'm also in CA and did it online. Got my Disability Insurance but not my Paid Family Leave yet. How long did you wait for the PFL?
@Aiken i unfortunately am not eligible for paid family leave because the company i work for does not have the minimum amount of employees required. however, from what i have heard, you get a message in the disability website or an email inviting you to apply for PFL and i believe the process is the same as disability. i think the eligibility is 6 weeks after a vaginal birth and 8 weeks after a c section. i dont know too much about it other than that!
@Emily thank you! yes, I applied for my PFL online but haven't gotten paid yet and it's been more than a month 😅 might need to head to the local office to follow up
Unfortunately you have to show up there
@Aiken you can also call your CA State official in case you don’t want to go in person. They have a direct contact with the department
If you haven’t been successful in calling you can call your State Assembly persons office ask them to open a case for you. They have direct access to EDD. https://findyourrep.legislature.ca.gov/
I had to go into the office. Way easier
@Aiken did you go out first before you could apply for disability or were you able to do beforehand? And did you have to get any kind of medical proof to do so? I’m just scared to stop working until I know for sure I’m going to get paid
@Samantha you can only apply for disability insurance the day you stop working. You won't be able to apply beforehand. And yes, I had to provide medical proof from my OB.
@Katherine tried calling the CA state rep and they only have the general number. Maybe I called the wrong office. Could you share the number you contacted before?
@Aiken which representative did you try contacting?
@Katherine this one - https://www.sos.ca.gov/administration/contact-information#main
@Aiken so it would have to be a state legislator. Here’s the website for them https://a42.asmdc.org
@Katherine Ah 😅 I knew I got it wrong lol thank you so much!

@Katherine did you call or submit a form?
@Aiken I would fill out the form and follow up within a week if they don’t respond back by then
@Katherine thanks again! ❤️
@Samantha did you ask your HR? They should be able to guide you through it. The pay took a few weeks though.
@Aiken I have been getting the run around from my HR and disability departments. It’s been the most insane thing
It’s basically impossible to get someone on the phone. Out of hundreds of calls I was able to get someone on the phone once. I already finished my disability period and have not been paid yet but I am not in CA at the moment. Waiting to get back so I can go in person and figure it out. It’s been so frustrating 😑
