Which option? When giving Christmas cards to neighbors

I know it’s technically illegal to open someone else’s mailbox but it seems so silly to me to have to pay for a stamp and wait 2 or 3 days for them to get your card when you can just walk over and put it in their mailbox yourself for free

I'd either tape it on their door or stick it in their door so it falls when they open it. If you leave a unstamped letter in the mailbox (in the US) the mailman will take it out if he delivers to the house that day and possibly fine you if he knows who it was

Why do you have to open it? Doesn't it have a slit opening at the front where the post goes? Or are these different mailboxs? We have letterbox here, and the postman and friends/family just put the letters in. I'm sure if you're close to your neighbours they wouldn't mind.

As someone from the uk with a letter box this post confused the crap out of me till I checked the comments 😂

I don’t think the legality of it has to do with putting something *in* does it? 🧐

What? It's not illegal? You just put it in like the postman does.

I’m uk so not much help. Would it be classed as a letter though if you don’t put the address on and just the name? Surely it’s the same as posting leaflets or something?

I mean, I leave letters in our neighbors mailboxes every year for Christmas, their birthdays, invitations to my boys’ birthdays… I actually had no idea this was considered problematic lol Woops

I mean wouldn’t someone have to report you? I don’t think your neighbours are going to report you for a Christmas card. 😂

Just wait until after the mail goes and then walk around and toss them in the mailboxes. It's not really a big deal when it's people you know and your not stealing or causing issues

Another American and I agree with @Kylie original comment. Stuff like that you push into the fold of the door between eye level and the handle/lock, so when they come home they see it or when they leave it’ll fall and they’ll hear it to grab it. Or like she said tape it so it sticks.

I was a mail person dont recommend putting it in the box.

@Drew can’t leave us hanging like that , why not ??

@Olivia bc it's a federal offense and if I was your mail person I'm assuming it's out going mail if it's in the box so I'm taking it ..one time someone put running shoes i wasnt able to put the mail in my supervisor told me to bring them back 🤮didn't wanna touch them and they got charged postage , mail ppl can be assholes at times

UK here - the fact you can’t touch someone else’s mailbox seems absurd to me. How do you hand deliver anything to anyone?! Would stop all the stupid flyers we get I guess though.

@Sarah you leave it in/on/under/at their door. It’s illegal to take someone else’s mail or read it, therefore there should be no reason you’re touching their mailbox. And as stated, the mail person will take it - assuming it’s mail to be sent off. Only the mail person puts things in to be taken & resident puts things out to be mailed. If you know the person and where they live, then you mail it to them or you drop it off to them directly (or stick it in their door for only them to have access to grab).

@Macdalia In the UK, we have a letterbox on our front door. Postman puts it through the letterbox and that's it. The fact that anyone can just come along and take your post out of a mailbox in the US has always been insane to me.

This is so bizarre to me as someone with a letterbox (UK) 😂 illegal to post a letter by hand to someone's post box is wild.
