Any project managers here

Would you say that to go into PM one needs to have a degree like an Msc? Or simply a short online training will suffice?

I am a project manager and work remotely, never did any formal training but I got into an entry level position as an assistant to project manager and worked my way up. But I have always worked with small start ups, it might be different if you want to join a big company. That said I know a couple other people who did the same sort of thing in bigger companies. I think it’s important to be a generalist and to be good with people, and getting people to do what needs to be done. I definitely don’t think you need to do an MSc but if you’re interested in doing the online training it probably won’t hurt your applications. But personally if I was hiring someone it would be as an assistant PM and I’d just train them myself so wouldn’t be bothered if they had any formal training. Hope this helps!

I am a PM for a large insurance company and have worked my way into the role over time… are you employed or just starting out? I did Prince2 in 2019 for personal development rather than as a requirement for an employer. Doing qualifications won’t do any harm, but it won’t necessarily guarantee you a job I don’t think. Experience in a similar role will be more beneficial. Xxx

@Kathryn thanks. Yes this is very helpful. Hoping I'll get a position as an assistant PM first, so I work my way up

@Josephine great, thanks. Hopefully someone will give me a chance to learn on the job. I've only got a Bsc
