How many mom/dad gifts should be opened during birthday party?

I probably have a total of 30 items for my son’s 2nd birthday. Wrapped into about 15 gifts. He is super good about opening the paper but i worry about others because i know everyone has different incomes for their own children

I’d say all

This is a totally unhelpful comment but it still blows my mind that you open your gifts at the party in the US. In the Uk you’d wait until after the party and wouldn’t open them in front of anyone! 🎁

@Emilie I was going to say the same and then we write/send little thank you notes.

Me personally would want the gifts from myself and dad opened more private/one on one but I also don’t do kids bday parties like that so

@Emilie Yup! Im changing this tradition in my house. I don’t like the rush open that the kids don’t even care about looking to the people and saying thank you and most parties I don’t even remember who gave what and I can’t say thank you without messing up.

We don’t open any gifts at birthday parties (and I’m in the US). Unless you’re going to have the party stop and watch him opening gifts I don’t think it would be clear which gifts were from you vs others though.

30 is crazy Do you guys celebrate Christmas? .. i wouldn’t make anyone sit and watch a kid open 15/30 gifts. Usually my child gets 3 max on bday and they would open it at the party but next birthdays we wont be opening anything until guests leave/we’re at home.

Some of these comments is why we will only have intimate birthdays for our son.

@Emilie family is different as they want to see your child’s reaction (uk also) however I would do ours separately. Child is going to get overwhelmed otherwise. That said my idea of a party would be a small gathering and a bbq.

@Emilie I've started not opening presents at my kids parties. They never really want to stop playing to do it and then i have to deal with other small kids getting jealous and/or stealing the new toys. It's easier to just open them after and send thank you cards after

@Emilie I would love to open them alone at home, but with my family you are practically hounded to open them😭

@Karen oh absolutely! When she was younger and we had a “family tea party” with literally just immediate family she opened her gifts. But this year for her 4th birthday she’s having a party with friends so she will open those when they’ve gone home so I can write thank yous properly! X

@Sally stash them away somewhere!! Haha. I would just not want my daughter too as she doesn’t get like ott excited and I wouldn’t want someone to think she hates a gift when she didn’t she just gets overwhelmed easily but things!! 😂

15 gifts/30 items!! For a 2 year old ? Holy gosh! You must not have a house full of "stuff" yet.. lol don't worry that'll come and you'll be like okay we have way to much shit in here! We need to get rid of it. I personally like to open gifts at home after the bday party. Most parties I go to are 2 hours max, kids play, eat cake , sing happy bday ect, then play to burn off that energy/treats so there really isn't any time to sit and watch the child open presents. Instead we do it after around family at home. I send thank yous as well.

I say 1-2 only because he’s just two.

My kids open most of their gifts on the morning of their birthday and then they open 1 or 2 at their actual party. That's how my mom did it for us as kids so we just kept that tradition.

None. That is a LOT of presents. Open them on your own time. Young kids can get jealous very easily and it’d be hard for any child to SEE that many gifts let alone watch them be opened. Same thing with party guests’ presents. Open them later. Let the kids enjoy playing with each other!

0. We don't open gifts at parties. That's nt expectations and we are a ND family

We open gifts once the party is over and everyone has gone home! This way things don’t go missing or if someone couldn’t afford to bring something they don’t feel uncomfortable. Many other reasons too but just the basics.

None. Presents from us are opened the morning of their birthdays. If the party was same day, they'd already be opened and if it's a different day then it doesn't matter. I've never even been to a party where gifts are opened then anyway

Yeah I only give 1 or 2 gifts for their birthday and I wait until the very last minute to open anything Whoever is still around, they’ll open those gifts. I’d rather them not open in front of others unless that person is excited to see them open it. Normally it’s just grand parents. I love the idea of waiting for later and sending cards. Might teach a lot more appreciation. Idk I get excited to see people open what I got then when I’ve spent a lot of time and put thought into a gift. But I don’t mind if I’m not there.

I wouldn't open any gifts at a party. Let everyone enjoy the party and not be sat around watching a child open a crazy amount of presents. I always think it would be super awkward for those attending, what if they haven't bought something as expensive as someone else, people buy the same gift, your kids reactions says he doesn't like it If you are set on opening gifts at the party, just do from the party guests

I can’t imagine a bunch of kids are going to enjoy sat watching someone open presents after present. Sounds awful! Let the party be for partying and let your child open their gifts at home.

@Chloe only a few things are what I’ve actually purchased. Then there is stuff that was meant for Christmas that i saved for his birthday from our local Christmas sign up. My work also did stuff for my kids and they got him so much. His party is Pixar cars and all the stuff I’ve saved/bought is themed Pixar cars

On my daughters birthday she got a ton of gifts, more people came than we thought, but all the people/kids sat and watched her open them all, I honestly regret letting her open them all, it took a quite a bit of time and kids aren't that patient lol, I think we should've only done a couple at the party and the rest at home, I think it would've been better So that's what I would suggest

@Karen I HATED that as a kid. I never felt like I reacted enough. I have anxiety opening gifts in front of people to this day. 😅

You're going to have too many toys! I hope you have a lot of storage, they pile up fast and someone will have to dig you out lol!

@Jennifer so many presumptions being made here.

@Nevaeh the party is in our home 🏠

@Lea-ann you could always do it after the party is over too, once the people leave

@Jennifer not all toys! It’s just the first time he’s really showing interest in a character/show. He’s got stuff for every room. Actually more clothes than toys! And split between current size and the next!

My girls open their presents from me in the morning before the party. They have a party to celebrate and have fun with friends and family. All presents from the party get opened at home afterwards

None. Do people normally open presents at the actual party? I've never seen this done, but my little one will always open his presents from us, in the morning of his birthday.
