Maternity pay /tax

Does anyone know how it works with paying tax during maternity pay? Do we still have to pay it then get it back at the end of the year or is it automatically calculated as soon as SMP starts so that we don't pay anything/less during those months??

I’m still taxed every month. I also still pay my pension and student loans debt.

Oh that sounds just fabulous. Hope you're coping OK. I'm dreading it zz

It stings especially as SMP comes from the taxpayer pot on money you already were taxed on, then they tax your tax a second time.

I completely forgot about my pension deductions too! Oft I wish I had never asked haha xx

I didn’t get taxed at all last year on maternity. I did pay into my pension still.

I'm wondering if it depends which month you go at maternity and how long they've got to calculate it

Well this thread has depressed me more than my Braxton Hicks...😮‍💨

I went on maternity 4th January last year then again 6th January this year 🫣

I got paid differently each month between £700-£800

Incog, it depends on your income and where you are in the tax year when you go on mat leave. If you stay under the tax threshold you won’t pay tax and NI.

It's so hard to plan and budget isn't it when everything is so circumstantial.
