I am changing jobs internally in 2 weeks and I told my two managers (the old one and the new one) in the same day before the Xmas dinner. I was very anxious. As you said, great men but you never know. I practiced the script for a whole week to end up saying it shortly and concrete. I basically said that I was expecting, how far I was, my due date and my initial maternity plan. I say initial because you can always change your mind (and I clarified this as well). It went well. They both managers reacted very positevely. Even if it’s not ideal for them, as people managers they should react well. Otherwise a) maybe it’s not the right place to be and/or b) they can have a problem with HR. Dont think it too much. It will go well!!
Specialist HR here… It might make you feel more comfortable to read up the maternity policy/ employee guidance before your meeting just to help you feel confident! Be brave, everyone I’m sure will be really excited for you- this is a positive home life news update, and you should feel able to share your excitement. You don’t have to share anything much, just keep it to bare minimum if you wish! That you’re expecting a baby and as soon as you get your MATB1 from your midwife you’ll submit to your manager. Your manager should carry out some sort of risk assessment (even if it’s not formally called that) to keep you and baby safe at work, even in office roles. Good luck 🤞🏻 x
Thank you guys, I think I will just say it straight away and deal with it! I think saying it confidently is defo important as I don’t want to be a people pleaser and come across nervous etc. Risk assessment will defo need to be done as I’m expected to do Scotland to Bangkok in Feb for a sales meeting and in general my job consists of a lot of time on the road and covering Northern Ireland with flights. Thank you for your advice and experiences :) x
I stressed from when I found out (around 5 weeks) until I told them just after my 12 week scan, as I found on my 2nd week at my new job, (typical try for 15 months decide to have a break while I settle into new job and bam pregnant) but honestly everyone so far has been so nice! I think definitely easy to build it up in your head! Hope all goes well today!
Thank you everyone! I told him today… eventually 😂 he was great, and then he proudly paraded me as a pregnant woman around my sales areas😂… men😂 x
Awww so happy for you! Knew it would be okay x
This is actually the hard bit..the thinking about doing it. I would go in there and do it first thing so your nerves don’t build all day. Be excited when you tell them your news. Because..it is exciting. If he is a good people manager he will support you and be happy for you! I’m very lucky where I am. I’m a head of department and was so nervous but everyone has been so very happy and excited for me..just making sure I am actually coming back hehe! You’ll be fine! RIP the bandage off x
