How should we spell our daughter's name?

I would say Keira - so many people will get it wrong. Every substitute teacher ever.

I’m from Ireland so know a few Ciaras and they all have said they get “see-air-ah” when they go abroad… outside of Ireland no one pronounces it correct!!

My flatmate at university’s name was ‘Kee-ra’ but spelled Ciara. No one ever pronounced her name right.

In England Ciara is more like “Carrr-ra”where as Kiera is “Keer-ra”

I misclicked and selected Keira🤦🏼‍♀️ but I prefer Ciara for the reasoning behind it! People may get it wrong, but you can have the simplest name in the world and have it mispronounced/misspelt. Anna could be a-na, or ahh-na like in Frozen for example. If it was purely based on which one is less likely to be said/read wrong in an English speaking country, it would be Keira, I can see Ciara being said with a soft C “s” sound but also as key-ahra. She’s likely to have to correct anyone anyway, as I imagine people could still mess up the e and i spelling Keira, or still pronounce it key-ahra. I had two girls in my year at school called Ciara, one pronounced Kee-ra, one pronounced Key-arah and everyone at school seemed to get it after the first couple of weeks! Either way, the meaning behind it would be most important to me if I was making that decision🫶🏻

I like authenticity so I picked Ciara. People learn how to pronounce things once corrected!

I love Ciara. I know two Ciara's and I've never mispronounced! I am in Liverpool though and there are a lot of Irish roots here. I also lived in Ireland for a short time growing up so maybe that's why. If you really like the name then don't let the chance that some people might say it wrong put you off.

See I would pronounce both of those "kee-arr-ah" Like Kiara Knightley So yeah go with the spelling you think looks pretty

@Ella her name is Actually Keira Knightley pronounced the way we were going to. I guess people will say it wrong either way then 🤷‍♀️

See, in the US, everyone is going to mispronounce Ciara, and "See-AIR-a", but since it's a traditional name, and not a made up spelling, I don't think that should deter you. My name is always mispronounced, and it /did/ really bother me growing up, but I grew to truly love my name and am unbothered by needing to help people out pronouncing it :)

I pronounced it like your aunt did. I will say it will get annoying correcting people! I love my daughters name in Spanish but Americans always pronounce it in English and I’m having to correct it and it’s annoying 😂 but I still wouldn’t change her name. Choose what you want girl. Others will learn! ❤️❤️

From experience (my name is pronounced see air uh), people will pronounce it wrong no matter how it is spelled so I would spell it however makes you happy I get Clara, key are uh, care uh, Sahara (like the desert), see are uh, key air uh, seer uh and more In all honesty, I DO find it annoying but it doesn’t bother me nearly as much now as it did as a kid I’m in the US and the typical pronunciation of Ciara is see air uh. Although the more typical spelling of that pronunciation is sierra/siera Full disclosure: With either of those spellings, I would have pronounced it incorrectly

I looove Ciera for 'kee-ara' but that would be hard for her growing up. It might be funny to deal with as she gets older but my last name is a fashion designer, my parents didn't know at the time both military naming me Lauren that I would forever deal with comments "Oh Ralph Lauren haha wow, bet you hear that enough" & it's ruined my social security, I've been compromised 2x, for 6 years I could not have a bank account out of being hacked every week with no social media besides fb. Now I'm 30, married. & after all of that! I decided to keep my dad's last name bc it was always a huge topic/ such a debate/ issue that I carried for so long I didn't want to let go of it all of a sudden. Today I have a bank account, it's very secure because of the issues I've had I pay 5 dollars extra a month for the security. I still have to go in person for anything big like city hall, post office bc no one believes my name is my name lol, jobs are the same they can't believe it till they meet me & go OH WOW you're real!?

All that to say my parents immediately changed all my Dr's paperwork to call me my middle name since I was 6mo old to 'Alexis' & changed it to my legal name however my first name still was Lauren. When I was 15 I had an apiphany where I didn't want to be called my middle name anymore.. if Lauren is my first name then I need to own that & I'm 30 soon & I still stand by my first name lol 😆 so yes it could work, is it worth the hassle? That's up to you. I personally avoided naming my daughter something that could cause conflict Initially her initials were going to be DAB D. Antoinette. B because I loooove Antoinette.. it was my favorite counselors name who got me emancipated & held my hand even after she left the practice checking in on me. So I decided 2 middle names for my daughter so her initials are D.A-M.B bc she broke the world post lockdown first week of May 2020

@Lauren I'm sorry you've been through all of this, but our daughter's name won't be that of anyone famous. This is more an issue of having to correct people on the spelling/pronunciation. I can't see any reason it would affect her social security or anything in the future...

As a Ciara but pronounced ‘Kyra’ in England I have got to the point at 27 years old where I answer to anything! School, new jobs, doctors appointments no one ever gets it right and not many people call me ‘keira’ either 😂 Personally wouldn’t recommend if you live anywhere outside of Ireland but I do get compliments on my name when it’s written down or I actually bother to correct people😂 even some family members still can’t spell or pronounce my name right after 27 years 🤦🏼‍♀️

I adore the Irish spelling! My husband is Irish and we were torn between that and Niamh for my LG’s middle name! We chose Niamh in the end but we’ll deffo use Ciara if we have another girl!

I taught a Ciara and it was pronounced see-eh-rah. I think if you want people to know how it’s pronounced, you need to make it phonetic.

I think you’d get a lot of “see-air-ah” with Ciara bc of the celebrity by that name

My cousin spells it as Kiera which makes the most sense to me. Spelt with a C leads me to pronounce it as See-ar-uh
