Kit Days and SMP

Hi Does anyone know much about how KIT days work? I am currently on SMP. I’m debating on doing some KIT days towards the end of my maternity to boost my pay. I’ve looked into this online but I can’t make sense of it. I presumed I’d still get SMP but extra for the day I’d worked but from what I’m reading I feel like it sounds like the days work will just be deducted from my SMP, meaning it’s pointless and I’m no better off for the days work. I don’t know if I’ve misinterpreted it. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hey 😊 you are entitled to up to 10 KIT days while you're on mat leave. You will continue to receive SMP, however you may be paid more, depending on your company policy. I'd suggest checking the policy on this. Usually, companies top up your SMP to full pay for the hours you work during a KIT day. Regardless of how many hours you work on a KIT day, it will count as 1 day out of the 10 you're entitled to, but as mentioned, you may only be paid for the actual amount of hours you work. https://www.acas.org.uk/your-maternity-leave-pay-and-other-rights/while-youre-on-maternity-leave

I’d be absolutely fine being paid for the hours I worked, a few days towards the end of maternity will really help. But I was just hoping it wouldn’t just lessen my SMP so I still receive the same in total. I guess I’ll have to speak to my company to see what they say, I just wanted to understand it more first. Thank you

Im not sure but im planning to take my KIT days during the last 3 months of the year off, when everything is completely unpaid anyway

Depending on your office policy, the whole idea of KIT days is that you get paid SMP plus any extra to equal your full pay (as if you were working)for those 10 days.

@Laura Isi thanks you, that’s what I was presuming and hoping. When reading it it just didn’t sound like that was guaranteed 🤞🏼
