Levothyroxine

Hi everyone! Is anyone here of Levothyroxine? In December the doctor advised me to take 50mcg but I had a blood test last week and now they are saying it is too high and should be down of 25mcg. I’m currently 17 weeks pregnant. What affects might this have on a baby? How often should I get a blood test?

I’m not but I’m a midwife and we see lots of women on levothyroxine in pregnancy. Sometimes the drs will suggest alternating doses each day to get a happy medium so maybe they will retest on the lower dose and see how you get on with it?

I didn’t realize I needed to test every month- I tested on Dec 3rd then again on Jan 28th. Is that too big of a gap?

No I don’t think so. I’ve had some months where there’s been a bigger gap. I only know to book because my doctors told me to book in monthly. My midwife has done it too when I get checks. Maybe speak to your midwife too? X

@Abi how much of a gap has been your biggest?

6ish weeks x

I’ve taken it my whole first pregnancy. No effects on the baby, if you leave it untreated then it affects the baby. They have done the blood tests at the beginning of every trimester to check the levels

I am on levothyroxine, I get followed up in antenatal clinic and bloods once per trimester. I had the second trimester bloods done the other day at 21 weeks and if all ok they won’t recheck until around 32 weeks 😊

I’ve been taking levothyroxine even before pregnancy as I have an under active thyroid and dr has changed it from 100 to 125mg in pregnancy and I’ve had no issues it’s a safe drug in pregnancy as far as I’m aware I’m under a Dr throughout the whole pregnancy for it under the antenatal team- which I will add have been great! I have to have it to keep me goint otherwise I’m on the floor as I get super tired and other horrible symptoms without it, good luck with your pregnancy! I’m nearly at the end of mine thank god!

Guidelines say to have a blood test every 6 weeks. I only found this out at 18 weeks pregnant and asked my GP to be referred to an Endocrinologist. When I got pregnant they should’ve upped my medication but didn’t , luckily my TSH are in normal range so no issues but my T4 dropped which is apparently normal in pregnancy. I’m not being monitored , had bloods done last week and seeing the specialist again this Friday. I’m on 50mg Levothyroxine- the specialist said the baby uses their own thyroid after 13 weeks so there’s no issues. It’s normal for them to change your dosage during pregnancy , just advocate for yourself and make sure they monitor you. If they don’t send you for a blood test, request one from the GP. That’s what I did x

I’m also on it. I paid to see a private endocrinologist as my dr had no clue. I’ve had my dose upped to 100mg 5 days a week and 75mg 2 days from 50mg. Because I’ve had it upped numerous times I’ve had monthly blood tests (currently week 13). He said in his recent letter - ‘In terms of your thyroid function, our goal in pregnancy is to keep your thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) level below 2 mU/L. Your thyroid hormone requirements increase during pregnancy, typically until around 16-20 weeks gestation. After 20 weeks gestation, your baby's thyroid gland will be fully mature and able to produce its own thyroid hormone. At this point, your levothyroxine dose will likely plateau and remain steady until deliver.’ You can ask for monthly blood tests. Though sounds like you’re around the stage where it stabilises. Hope this helps Xxx
