Boys in gymnastics

Today we did a trial class for gymnastics my son and my daughter and he was the only boy in 3 total classes (baby toddlers, 3-5, 6-10) And it just made me think… why? They jump and roll and flip in gymnastics and learn their biomechanics And in the 5 and under ages it’s mostly the parents going “you need to have an activity let me put you in gymnastics” not them expressing their interest in a sport… so why aren’t there more boys in gymnastics? Am I just at the wrong studio? What activities are you putting your 5 and under boys in?

You might just be at the wrong gym. My daughters go to a gym that has boy specific classes for over 5s and the under 5 classes are coed. My 2 year old has multiple boys in her class. Find a gymnastics gym with a recreational program instead of a dance studio with gymnastics classes

I wouldn't put my son in gymnastics but simply because he seems very clumsy and chubby so I don't think will suit him. But I have some friends who put their boys in gymnastics so not that unusual. Besides it seems very fun for them

@Charlotte our gym is only gymnastics not dance and gymnastics

@Elisabeta Furtuna my son is VERY clumsy and that’s exactly why I put him in gymnastics

We’ve had a couple boys start in our class and never come back. I’d definitely put my boys in gymnastics especially if they’re anything like my daughter and husband lol we’re wanting them to play hockey or ice skate but we’re open to trying anything they’re interested in. Did your son enjoy it? I sometimes wonder if the boys notice there aren’t other boys and don’t want to come back or if its just not as fun as we think

@Asha ah I see, might think.about it then. He is still very young but likes watching men gymnastics actually haha. Thanks for the idea

@Tessa loved it I signed them up officially The jumping and rolling was super up his alley I actually hit up the parents of a boy he goes to school with and they signed him up too so he won’t be the only anymore He actually is trying hockey in a couple weeks! We live in Orange County and the Ducks have a bunch of community programs so he’s going to try hockey for free and we can borrow gear and everything to see if he’s actually into it before committing

@Asha It may have just been the hour that your class was that those particular classes are short on boys. Check with the gym for their schedule and see if they have boys only classes and when they are

@Charlotte no boys only class every thing is coed for their age

Our son is in football class but only because it he is absolutely obsessed with balls and kicking them around. He is 2.5 but he does go to the pink gym for their free play and if he asked to go to classes I'd certainly let him.

I have my 4 year old twin boys in gymnastics and they are with mostly girls too. We even enlisted them in what they call their “ninja course”- it’s so cute-and it’s mostly girls. The studio sells all girl leotards and bags, hair accessories and stuff too. I wonder if it’s just more popular for girls? Especially at that age? I dunno lol

I'm in the UK but I've been thinking about putting my 3 year old in gymnastics, baby ballet/dance, baby ballers, mini athletics and swimming. I don't see why something has to be gender specific boys can do gymnastics. Maybe try promote the class to other boy mums in your area or see if the group will try make it seem boys are welcome too

@Stacey 🇵🇸 it feels like the perfect activity for them at that age And I don’t think it bothers him since he’s usually the only boy unless there’s a scheduled play date

@Devon I hit up a dad today of a boy my son goes to school with and he signed his son up immediately 🤣 so he’ll join the class next week My son is almost 5 and I’m noticing that things are just getting increasingly gendered

My son does swimming, dance and soccer. We are looking for a tumbling class for him, but we live in a very small town. We're going to do skating next winter and possibly tball. Track when he turns 4

@Ellie I was thinking about track I would need to find a club for him since we missed the rec deadline But next year sissy will be 4 so she can do it too

My son didn’t want to do gymnastics because he said it’s a girl sport. I tried to tell him it wasn’t but I think seeing no boys at the studio my daughter went to didn’t help. Also, I’ve noticed a few parents give me weird looks when I suggest boys in gymnastics so I think some parents also look at it as a girl sport

My daughters do gymnastics at the ymca. There's a boy here and there but mostly girls. I wonder if it's at least partly just due to the variety of programs. My oldest (boy) did gymnastics when he was small but then wanted to try karate and stuff like that. So if there's a conflict of time/day and you can only choose one, gymnastics might not be the top of the list.

@Jessica just show him Olympic highlights. The guys have some crazy events (pommel horse and rings) especially the filipino from the last Olympics https://youtube.com/shorts/n7Y8jKWg0dw?si=C60qygVKswEZwI7b A little blurry, but crazy strength, he also won gold and ton of money/property https://youtube.com/shorts/7qQOMlbk6dw?si=4Ar2t5WKjO_CqyF7 Also found this routine. Looks like he's just enjoying life

@Asha oh yeah it’s fantastic and my boys are always wooped afterwards. Then they practice their new skills at home or the trampoline park haha

@Jessica as of now mine doesn’t say anything is for girls or boys And I think it’s partially because he’s not even 5 yet We did convince another parent to sign his son up for gymnastics too so my son won’t be the only one But like I know women outnumber men lol but there’s no way we outnumber this much it’s got to be choice that there’s not a bunch of boys in gymnastics because it seems like the most age appropriate sport to start off with

There were a lot of boys in my daughters gymnastics class

@Brittany when I was in Atlanta I noticed that there were a lot of tumbling classes targeted at boys too comparatively to being in SoCal

Wow, I just had my son start a trial class of gymnastics today! He had 3 other boys in his class. I've been worried about him being the only boy. He had a blast there, and we signed him up. The reason why I went with it is because he loves to do flips, jumps, etc, so I thought he definitely needs this. Maybe call around to other gyms or see if there's other times that have boys. Good luck!

@Rachel his friend registered today without the trial class But as of now he doesn’t seem bothered to be the only I just thought it was weird considering it’s 2025 and I’m in California

@Asha ok, that's good then. I think it's weird too, but hopefully, they will have fun and more boys will get into it

Our 4 year old son does gymnastics with Little Gym (UK? Franchise) and loves it, he's been doing it since he was 2(?). He really enjoys swinging on the bars and isn't so keen on the beam. There is a good gender mix in all the classes that he's been in so far, which is nice. I don't think it is something he will get into seriously but I think he had a few more years of being able to do it for fun. At his nursery they do gymnastics and ballet each week, so he does both of those there as well (also woodworking, playball and they did do Spanish and I hope they will start doing it again). Outside of nursery he does swimming lessons. We have thought about tots rugby (he has more of the build for that than football) but decided it would be too much at the moment.

@Asha I love that! I mean honestly what kid doesn’t want to hang on, jump on and roll around on stuff lol we’re wanting have similar through the Nashville predators here our oldest is a little delicate so I’m not sure it’s going to be her vibe. Even ice skating wasn’t her favourite because she fell one time 😅

@Tessa lol that’s why I don’t think he’ll like it 🤣 but we get to try it for free to find out Gymnastics though as of now is a total hit

I tried putting my son in gymnastics 3 times at various different ages and he just never got into it. I didn’t want to pay money and force him to do something he didn’t want to do.

@Dory that part lol that’s why I’m nervous about organized anything for child but he did pretty ok

My daughter is in Gymnastics and last year there was 1 boy out of like 12 in her class for half the year, and then none this year.. I’m honestly not sure why not! I don’t have boys, so no activity suggestions!

My son is in gymnastics and he’s 2! I plan to keep him in it for all the reasons you mention until he shows interest in something else.
