Maternity Grant

I'm receiving universal credit at the moment as I only get statutory maternity pay. I was told that I can apply for the £500 Sure Start Maternity Grant as this is my first child. When filling out the form it asks if there's another child under the age of 16 living at your address and my SS lives with us some of the time. I called CAB to check and they said that I won't be eligible due to my step son, even though he's now 10 and I met my partner a long time after he was born. It feels really unfair as this is my first child, has anyone else applied for this? Thanks

It shouldn’t matter you should still receive it as it’s your first child.

@Anais that's what I thought but CAB said that as my step son technically lives with us (9 nights a fortnight, 5 with his mum) that it would rule me out 🙁

Step kids don’t count! Just say they don’t live with you. X

I personally wouldn’t have given them that info.

I ran into the same issue, they do in fact count step kids which is insanely unfair in my opinion as this is your first child. I called them to double check and they did confirm I wouldn’t be eligible due to step daughter living with us. They justify it by saying that they’d expect you (or spouse) to already have baby equipment from the first (stepchild)…Absolute joke I know.

@Hali sorry to hear you've had the same stupid experience. So unfair that they're basically depriving a child of money that they should be entitled to 😡 How many people are going to have stepchildren young enough that they'd still have baby equipment or that their mum hasn't kept 🤦‍♀️ Thanks for letting me know!
