Difficult afternoons

What do you do with your toddler in the afternoon? I always struggle with what to do in afternoons. On a morning I will generally take him to some sort of stay and play, or park if the weather is okay, but once he's up from his nap around 2.30pm i really don't know what to do! Sometimes we just stay at home, but it is hard to keep him entertained. I've tried introducing new things, like colouring with crayons, but he's only interested for about 2 minutes. If I try to get chores done in the afternoon (cooking/cleaning) he just whines until I come and sit with him.

They aren't cheap but if you have space could you get him a learning tower so he can "help" you cook? I got one for free off Marketplace but Amazon sell them too. We often go for a walk to the library to kill some time. Most libraries have a nice kids area with sensory toys too. We get some books out then come home and read them together. That kills about 1.5 hours! Lots of libraries have free baby groups on too.

I have been thinking about a learning tower actually but was wondering if they're a bit too old for him! I think I will get one soon though. Unfortunately for me most things are a drive away, rather than a walk! Does your little one sit for reading for a good amount of time? I have lots of books for my little boy and always imagined we'd spend lots of time reading but he just wants to get up after a few mins 🤣

I think the learning towers are probably more useful once they are older. But if he can stand well then he'd probably enjoy it! Ah I rely on walking everywhere because my daughter hates the car 😅 She'll read books for maybe 10 minutes then want to do something else. I try to get the ones with felt flaps because they are a bit more interactive. Then I ask her "can you see the pig? Point to the pig. What noise does a pit make?" And stuff like that to make it more engaging for her. It's also less painful for me than rereading the same story 800 times a day 😅

He does stand well, I imagine it will be something he'll enjoy for a few minutes and then want to get down 🤣 but probably something he'll like more when he's older! My little boy doesn't mind the car but it's just such a faff getting them in the car seat then out and into winter coats etc 🫠 so I try to avoid multiple car journeys in a day. Oh that's so good! And yes lift the flap ones are always a good choice. I tried recently some board books with photos of actual babies in them, as I noticed my little one seems to be drawn to real pictures of children/babies, but still he only wants to look for a few mins 🫠

I'd recommend the Tuppence and Crumble star wraps as they are safe in the car seat. And they have a built in hat and mittens that flap over. We use it in the pram and in the car all the time. I got one for £5 plus delivery from Vinted. Not sure how we'll manage next year when she's outgrown it! Have you tried soft play? If you have a local children's centre (sometimes known as family hubs) they often have free soft play and other activities. That could be a good afternoon activity in the winter when it gets dark so early and it's freezing cold!

I've never heard of this but will have a look! Sounds really useful. Yes 😊 we regularly do soft plays and other activities like that but generally in the morning as it works better time wise. Usually he wakes up in the afternoon at 2.30pm and by the time I've got him ready and he's had a snack etc and with driving time included they're usually closing, or already closed.
