So I’ve got GD currently going through my first week of properly monitoring it etc, if you want some more information feel free to message me 😊
I’m in the same boat! I was told that a blood test will be taken on arrival and then I’ll be given a glucose drink. I’ll then need to return for another blood test 2 hours later. The midwife explained to me that it’s common and provided me with reassurance. I’d perhaps get in contact with your midwife to share your worries so that they can help ease any anxiety prior to the test xx
I had my test on Thursday and still waiting on my results xx
I took it too and had my result two days later. I felt a bit nauseous and tired during the two hour wait but fine as soon as I ate after so much less horrible than everyone said. Even enjoyed the drink itself 😅 toughest part was not eating because I still struggle with nausea on a good day let alone an empty stomach.
@Hannah you need to wait there as you’re not allowed to walk around (helps metabolise the sugar which is bad for the test but good if you do have it) so they like to keep an eye on you in the waiting room I was told. Bring a book!
@Ebony would love some more information please. I did my at home test Sunday and got a voicemail to say I've got GD today. I missed the person I needed to speak to so have to wait until tomorrow. But anything you can share in the meantime would be super helpful. I'm retiring the Haribo Tangfastics from now!
@Rachel I’ll send you a message!
@Rachel I was told to measure three times a day and enter your results in the app. The diabetologists look at them and decide whether you need medication/ insulin. They also give you an intro to blood sugar friendly nutrition. I’m managing my spikes fine with nutrition so pairing every carb with fat protein and fiber. It’s a pain but like a biscuit or cake with a generous glob of clotted cream and some berries doesn’t spike mine but I no longer just randomly snack on a few haribo throughout the day sadly. Everyone’s different though, it’s not binary at all. You got this!!
I had mine last week, fast for 12 hours before your appointment, in, blood test, super sugary drink but it wasn’t too bad the sat for 2 hours then another blood test then done! Took my husband to sit with me incase I felt faint but I was fine! X
@Leonie thank you for sharing. I actually thought having GD meant all sweet treats were off the table so good to know it's not. My diet can be pretty carb heavy at times (bowls of pasta, toast, etc.) so I'm going to have to balance that out.
@Rachel definitely depends on your body, I’ve heard of some that spike looking at potatoes and others that can continue eating white bread so follow your numbers there! I had a bowl of pasta and plain sauce the other night and it really spiked me but then wholewheat rye pasta and bolognese was fine so it is annoying because it’s extra work mentally and physically (I’m a lazy cook normally lol) but worth it to avoid long term complications for you and baby! Post meal walks are also super helpful and a late night snack (I tend to do full fat Fage yog and nuts) helps keep me stable overnight!
@Leonie oh this is good to know! Thank you x
Hey I had mine a few weeks ago, it’s really easy, you fast from midnight the night before your appointment (water only no food). Then at your appointment they take some bloods, they then give you a glucose drink it’s a bit like a capri sun but thicker. Then you wait two hours and then they take some more bloods after the two hours is up. I was told they would ring me if I had GD and I would just get the results back at my next midwife appointment if I didn’t. I had my test Monday morning and a phone call on the Tuesday setting me up with the diabetic clinic for Tuesday afternoon.
