Labetalol

So I’ve been to triage today and cutting a very long couple of hours short I’ve come home with Labetalol for my blood pressure as they didn’t like that it was slightly raised throughout my time in hospital. However I am a little unsure on exactly what the guidelines on with taking it if my blood pressure reads normal. Has anyone else been given these tablets by the doctor/midwife please?

Have you got a way to measure it at home? What does it say on the packet? It might be preventative of building high blood pressure in which case take daily like aspirin or for random instances when it’s getting too high, the amount of tablets you’re given should indicate which too. For example I have been given 16 tablets for if my heart starts messing around that I carry around with me, there’s only 16 as I would only take one if I needed to. If you have loads you can assume it’s a daily thing, call them to check 😊

Are they not doing any monitoring? I got put on it as my bp had been borderline for my whole pregnancy and then was raised, and for two weeks I was monitored twice weekly and then I had a growth scan and consultant appt where it was decided to leave me on the dose for the rest of the pregnancy

Yes! I got put on this from 16 Weeks as my BP was always high in hospital/Doctors and they didn't like it. I was monitoring at home and it was normal but they wouldn't take the home readings - I didn't want to take them when my BP was normal at the begining so only took them from around 24hrs before my appt but they didn't make enough of a difference at the hospital readings so I've had to stay on them everyday. I've never had my BP drop low which is what I was concerned about. I think they are more of a stabiliser for when it raises. I take one tablet 3 times a day for reference - you can take more or less depending on what you midwife says x

I’ve spoken to triage this morning and I have a monitor at home. I have to take it if it’s raised or high but not normal unless it’s on the verge, and have to do my bp before and after each dose I take and then have to go in next Tuesday to have a profile and get an appointment for the consultant.

I was on labetalol from 38 weeks last pregnancy and was on it til about 8 weeks PP. The only time I stopped was when I had a haemorrhage and my BP dropped. But if your BP is reading it take it as prescribed. They should give you a monitor for at home or get one from the pharmacy.
