Glucose test

Just out of curiosity, is a glucose test always taken during pregnancy. I didn’t know if it’s something every woman has to have to rule it out or help with. Or whether it’s just a case of if you have certain symptoms and it’s mentioned then you get tested? Just seeing a lot of women mentioning them having it done. I’ve been in hospital very recently for potential pre eclampsia (thankfully ruled out) and I got the full works of blood tests then but nothing was mentioned about glucose with it all.

I didn’t have to have it with my Son but I have it on Monday with this baby. I asked why and the MW said because my BMI was measuring high, so no not the case for everyone x

In the UK, it's only done if you have certain characteristics, like being overweight, over 40 yo, have diabetes in the family or had it in previous pregnancies. I mentioned to my midwife that my sister had it during my intake visit and she signed me up for one. Otherwise I don't think I fit the criteria (despite being almost 40). Luckily I don't have it!

I didn't have one with my daughter but I've had one with this pregnancy and the midwife has arranged a second test as I've had 2 urine samples with glucose present. It goes on risk factors age bmi family history etc

If you have PCOS you are at higher risk regardless of BMI so they will test you

I've got other health conditions which is why I've been put forward to it. Unless you develop symptoms along the way, generally it gets arranged at your 12 week scan.... :)

@Vittoria that’s why I wondered as my MIL has the controlled by insulin type, my dad has the other. And I had a miscarriage last May, so wasn’t sure. Thank you xx

Also if you've had a previously larger baby they like to test you too, both my boys have been larger babies. First was nearly 10lb and second was nearly 9lb. Think I'm just prone to larger babies, as this time had the test and was negative. X

@Natalie oh I'm sorry!! To be honest, if you don't have any symptoms I wouldn't test it (the test in itself was fine but I felt nauseous for 2 days after). Double check with your midwife but chances are low.

@Vittoria it’s ok no need to say sorry it happens. No absolutely not, just thought I’d ask as this is our first pregnancy to go this far. So just wanted to make sure it was all good x

I had one at 30 weeks due to my bump measuring large X

The Glucose test is to check if you have gestational diabetes. As mentioned above, you should get the test if you have any of the risk factors or are showing symptoms. i’ve had it both pregnancies as i have an immediate family member whose type one diabetes.

it’s usually if you’re at a higher risk of developing gestational diabetes, like if a close family member (parent/sibling) is diabetic or if you’re overweight. you can also be offered the test for certain conditions, i had polyhydraminos with my first so had to get tested for GD

I was also told that it's less likely for white women to develop gestational diabetes. So I was offered the test because of my ethnicity.
