Medicine concern

I got UTI and doctor prescribed me sulfamethoxazole trimethoprim to treat the infection and I took it for almost 4 days (7 tablets ) Then stopped I am only 13 weeks pregnant, I didn't check on internet before ,just took the medicine as doctor instructed and I trusted her but internet says it's category D medicine and can cause harm to baby whereas my doctor says it's safe in second trimester. I am very scared Will taking it only for 4 days affect my baby in any way ? Has anyone gone through similar situation? Pls i need reassurance I am very anxious

It’s just discouraged during the first trimester, it’s usually contributes structural defects bc it’s a folic acid antagonist. But that’s during the first trimester. Do NOT stop taking antibiotics until the entire course of antibiotics is done.

I went to the doctor again, she said u can stop it as u have already taken it for 3-4 days and it should be good as u r young.

@Tala K. But is.it fine at 13 weeks?I cannot sleep due to this So scared if I hurt my baby 😭

If you did stop the antibiotics before they were finished go back to your doctor asap and tell them if you didn’t finish them. Just to reiterate you’re not in your first trimester or last trimester so there are no contraindications your baby is fine :) I know category D medications can seem scary, but in your case your doctor was right and it’s safe during your second trimester. I’m not sure where you got your information from, but the fact they didn’t elaborate on why it’s a category D, means the site you read was not a good site.

@Tala K. Hi I went to the doctor and she has instructed me to stop now as I had no symptoms and she says u can stop now

I didn’t see your comment until I posted my second one lol ignore the first bit 😂😂 Your baby is going to be fine. It just can affect the development of the neural tube (you had that checked at your 8-12 week ultrasound) so the antibiotics will not have affected it as it’s closed by week 8 or 9
