They don’t need entertaining as such at that age. A nappy change, feed and they are usually ready to go back to sleep again! We are nearly at 6 weeks and only starting to get slightly longer wake windows. Don’t stress xx
Nooo don’t feel guilty! They don’t need entertaining at this age. My lb is 4.5 weeks and we’re just nappy change and feed. He is more awake now so is often up for 1.5 hours and we just pop him in the bouncer for a little or if he’s unsettled then hold him. Probably the next 2ish weeks I’ll start to get some sensory toys out but still super early x
I tend to sing to baby face to face, I show her black and white cards and books with high contrast colours. Wake windows are so small though. We go for walks when she is awake too and she does tummy time either on me or a rolled up towel x
I felt the same about entertaining my three week old. I saw the midwife today and she explained they don’t need much entertaining. Some tummy time and lots of cuddles is fine, as is them looking around while you’re doing other things xx
Don’t feel guilty for trying to get him to sleep. Wake time shouldn’t be ages at this stage and babies can get easily overstimulated and do need support to sleep at times. The focus for now in an awake period is tummy time (aim for 3x 5min sessions over the day) and then just things like eye contact with you, poking your tongue out & smiling, talking/singing to baby. You could also use black & white cards for tracking and encouraging the head to move side to side. You could do baby massage or gentle baby stretches. Lying on a play gym. That is all plenty for this age. In a few weeks, you’d then introduce dangling toys to encourage reaching/grasping. Maybe some things with gentle noise like a rattle or wrist/ankle bell and teethers/mouth exploration after that. The majority of what they are doing right now is eating/sleeping. Nappy changes and bath are also very stimulating and can incorporate entertainment (singing/talking/black & white card at change mat).
