Sure Start Maternity Grant

Hey everyone. Has anyone managed to claim the £500 maternity grant for their first child? I’m reading if you have other kids in the house you can’t get it but this is my first child and my partners kids are 7 & 8 so that seems very unfair that I should miss out? Also obviously not going to have anything from when they were babies now😂 We claim UC but they aren’t listed on our claim anyway as BM gets any payments for them so could I just say there isn’t any other kids living here? That money would help quite a bit right now especially cause work stopped giving me overtime. Thank you.

I have had my 1st baby and I was under the impression I couldn’t have it because I wasn’t on any benefits! If someone could advise me differently, that would be great! Thank you ☺️

I wasn't allowed it because my partner has a daughter which I thought was unfair too

I got it and my partner has 2 kids but you need to be on benefits and we were receiving UC top up

I got it with my first and his older two only come every other weekend plus it goes against you not him you should still get it xxxx

You can still get it because it's YOUR first child. I received it and my partner already had a child but you must be in receipt of certain benefits

@Emma what kind of benefits? Assuming you can’t get it if both me and partner are full time working?

@Yasmin mainly universal credit or child tax credit and unfortunately you can't if you're working full time

@Emma so you can't get it if you are working full time? What if your partner isn't work?

My partner was working full time, I don't work as I'm at home with the kids but with UC we still received a top up. Worth checking

I should have said I was on UC (just had to apply again) sorry!🙈 When we were last on it sometimes we got something others we didn’t - I heard if they gave you nothing you wouldn’t get it. I’m off on maternity end of May so should I wait and apply then?

You can claim 11 weeks before the week baby is due up until 6 months after baby is born

I've applied too as I'm receiving a UC top up while on maternity leave. My baby is my first child but my 11yo step-son lives with us so I'm really hoping they'll still let me have it! @Emma @Emily do your step children live with you?

I had to wait until after my first UC payment before I could apply for it, then forgot and sent it off 2 days before babe was 6 months old 🤦🏻‍♀️ they still accepted it though

I’m currently 29 weeks - sounds like I could be okay so I’ll wait a few more weeks and then apply, thanks everyone! I’ll be more question though - Did you tick the box saying you had step kids or not? Xx
