Screen time

Holy shit… my average screen time is 11.5 hours a day. My toddler doesn’t even get any on the regular. I’m actually disgusted with myself.

I just deleted YouTube and Instagram off my phone. I’m literally wasting my life on these apps. My kids deserve a better mom. Idk how I got this bad but I won’t be anymore.

I find taking the baby/kids out reduces my screen time and helps w my steps also, like I did 18k steps just on Friday by being out and about all day. Look for places to go, things to do. I watch tutorials when I’m on YT or IG so when m I’m on it I’m not “wasting my time” as I’m learning my hobbies, but yeah for me what works is just, not being home. Beach, parks (3 types of parks here) and just spend your days out. If you can. We just got home from the market. 9k steps today.

I’ve started using my phone as a landline, sounds silly but it does work! Pick a spot in your house (preferably not near a cosy seat🤣) and decide that your phone lives there. If you want to use it you have to go stand by that area then put it back and walk away. Add a charging cable for extra effect to stop you accidentally wandering off while holding it! It’s helped me cut my screen time almost in half and while I don’t do it every day, the days I do it I feel so much better! All those little thoughts of ‘I wonder if xyz replied’ ‘let me check when Amazon is coming’ etc make me think twice because it’s more effort to go check. If that’s too much then it’s fine to put it near a comfy seat, as long as it stays there so when you get up you don’t take it with you. I’ve tried all the tricks (b&w screen to decrease dopamine from colour, screen time locks on apps, etc) and this is the only one that truly works for me

@Lauryne it’s easier to do that when you have a smart watch! As I’m doing my laundry and my phone is in the house charging for example, or I’m out and about and my phones in the pram, any calls any msgs any notifications come onto my smart watch and from there I can conclude is not important to ignore, or I have to go and reply to it asap. Helps so much! Plus it counts my steps, my heart rate, sleep, tracks my period/ovulation, lots of things. So so handy. I bought a cheap $15 on shein I’m not talking about a $ Fitbit or Garmin either

@Kellie Yesss this is such a good point! I recently got a second hand Apple Watch (which I prefer to my old basic smart watch since I can actually do things & reply to texts on there rather than just read notifs) so when my phone is away from me I can sometimes get the thing done on my watch which saves me from doom scrolling 😅 Often when I feel the need to check something on my phone I’ll say to my watch ‘hey siri, remind me to do xyz’ then later when I’ve got some free time I’ll have a list of reminders on my phone like a todo list of all the times I’ve wanted to check my phone

I fohnd a setting in my phone to make my screen a grey scale, it makes it a lot less stimulating and addictive. I’ve found it far easier to transition myself to another activity when it’s on greyscale.
